Sixth Sunday of Easter - Pastor’s Reflection

As we continue our Easter journey, the joy of the Resurrection remains at the center of our celebration. Today’s readings on this Sixth Sunday of Easter remind us that the risen Jesus does not leave His disciples—or us—alone. Instead, He offers us the gift of His abiding presence, His peace, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks these comforting words: “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.” This is one of the most beautiful promises of our faith. God does not remain distant or removed from our daily struggles. Through love and faithful obedience, God chooses to dwell within us. Our lives become sacred places where God lives and acts.

Jesus also promises the coming of the Holy Spirit, whom He calls the Advocate. The Spirit teaches us, reminds us of Christ’s words, and strengthens us to live as His disciples. Easter faith is not something we generate on our own. It is sustained by God’s Spirit, who accompanies us through moments of confusion, difficulty, and change. When we feel unsure of our direction or burdened by the challenges of life, the Holy Spirit continues to guide, inspire, and comfort us.

One of the central themes of today’s Gospel is peace. Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” This peace is not the absence of problems or conflict, but the deep assurance that God is present and in control. It is a peace the world cannot give—a peace rooted in trust, hope, and love. This gift allows us to face life’s uncertainties with courage and calm, even when the path ahead is unclear.

The First Reading shows the early Church discerning God’s will together. Faced with disagreement, the community listens, prays, and allows the Holy Spirit to guide their decisions. This reminds us that faith is lived not only individually but also communally. As a parish family, we are called to listen to one another, to seek unity, and to trust that the Spirit continues to work among us today.

The Sixth Sunday of Easter invites us to reflect on how we live our faith in everyday life. Do our choices reflect our love for Christ? Do we make room for God to dwell within our hearts? Are we open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit when faced with difficult decisions?

As we move closer to Pentecost, let us ask for renewed openness to the Spirit’s presence. May we embrace Christ’s gift of peace and become instruments of that peace in our families, our parish, and our world. Living as Easter people means carrying the light of the risen Christ wherever we go, trusting that God truly dwells with us, now and always.

Mendicant

In Catholic practice, mendicant refers to a group, usually a religious order, that relies on the generosity of others for their livelihood. This includes certain monastic congregations and orders that depend on “begging.”

Mothers Day Novena of Masses

Once again this year, our parish will celebrate nine days of Masses for our mothers – living and deceased. These Masses are scheduled for May 11-19 at the regular parish Mass times.

To have your mother remembered at these Masses, please use the envelope from your bimonthly packet marked Mother’s Day. (Or just use a plain envelope.) Write on the envelope the names of your mother, grandmother, godmother or mother-figure. Put your envelope in the collection basket or send it to the parish office. These envelopes will be placed on the altar during this Novena of Masses.

Catholic Trivia Night

Save the Date!

Our Third Annual Catholic Trivia Night will be on Wednesday, June 10 beginning at 6:30 pm.

Parish groups compete against one another for the title of St. Patrick Trivia Champions. Will the Knights of Columbus repeat as champions? Will the Youth Ministry make a run at the title? Will the choir sing toward a victory? Are the Rivette’s the dark horse challenger this year? What about your group? Form some new teams this year among neighbors, people from the same ministry, friends who attend the same Mass. Get your team of three people and start preparing.

Serra Meets with Guest Speaker Fr Lawrence Goodwin, CJM

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s Gospel is a continuation of last week’s Gospel: Jesus is speaking to his disciples at the Last Supper. In today’s reading Jesus offers encouragement to his disciples, who will soon see him crucified. He reassures them that even though he will leave them, he will not abandon them. Instead he will send them the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, through whom the disciples will continue to live in union with Jesus.

Jesus uses the term Advocate to describe the Holy Spirit, whom the disciples will receive. Another word used to describe the Holy Spirit is Paraclete, a legal term meaning “one who offers defense for another.” Note that Jesus says that he will send “another Advocate.” Jesus himself is the first advocate, interceding for his disciples with the Father.

In today’s reading Jesus contrasts his impending departure with the permanence of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus will leave to return to the Father, but the Holy Spirit will remain with the disciples.

Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples will come to know and appreciate the unity of the Son and the Father. They will also understand that they too participate in the communion between the Father and the Son: “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you” (John 14:20).

Today’s reading is one example of the contrast that John’s Gospel presents between the community of disciples, to whom God will reveal himself, and the unbelieving world, which will remain in darkness. The unbelieving world cannot accept the “Spirit of truth,” whom the disciples will receive. Only through the Spirit will God’s revelation and love be known.

VI Domingo de Pascua

Notas Pastorales

A lo largo del tiempo de Pascua, la Iglesia continúa celebrando la alegría de la Resurrección. En este Sexto Domingo de Pascua, las lecturas nos recuerdan que Jesús resucitado no nos deja solos. Él permanece con nosotros, nos ofrece su paz y nos envía el don del Espíritu Santo para guiarnos y fortalecernos en nuestra vida cristiana.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos dice: “El que me ama, guardará mi palabra, y mi Padre lo amará, y vendremos a él y haremos morada en él.” Estas palabras revelan una verdad profunda de nuestra fe: Dios no es distante. Él desea habitar en nuestros corazones. Cuando amamos a Cristo y vivimos su mensaje, nuestra vida se convierte en un lugar sagrado donde Dios vive y actúa.

Jesús también promete el envío del Espíritu Santo, el Defensor, quien nos enseñará y nos recordará todo lo que Él nos ha dicho. La fe no es solo un esfuerzo humano; es una respuesta sostenida por la acción del Espíritu en nosotros. En los momentos de duda, cansancio o dificultad, el Espíritu nos acompaña, nos ilumina y nos da fuerza para seguir adelante como discípulos del Señor.

Un tema central del Evangelio es el don de la paz. Jesús nos ofrece una paz diferente a la del mundo: “La paz les dejo, mi paz les doy.” Esta paz no significa ausencia de problemas, sino la certeza de que Dios está con nosotros en medio de toda situación. Es una paz que calma el corazón, que sostiene en la prueba y que nos permite caminar con confianza aun cuando enfrentamos incertidumbre.

La primera lectura nos presenta a la comunidad cristiana primitiva discerniendo la voluntad de Dios. Ante un conflicto importante, los discípulos escuchan, dialogan y se dejan guiar por el Espíritu Santo. Esto nos recuerda que la fe se vive en comunidad. Como parroquia, estamos llamados a caminar juntos, a escucharnos con respeto y a buscar siempre la unidad bajo la guía del Espíritu.

Este Domingo de Pascua nos invita a revisar nuestra propia vida. ¿Estamos viviendo realmente como discípulos de Cristo? ¿Permitimos que Dios habite en nuestro corazón? ¿Buscamos la guía del Espíritu Santo en nuestras decisiones diarias?

A medida que nos acercamos a la solemnidad de Pentecostés, pidamos un corazón más abierto a la acción del Espíritu. Que podamos acoger la paz que Cristo nos regala y convertirnos en instrumentos de esa paz en nuestras familias, en nuestra parroquia y en el mundo.

Vivir la Pascua es vivir con la certeza de que Cristo está vivo y camina con nosotros, hoy y siempre.
