SENIOR HEALTHY LIVING NEWSLETTER
BY COMFORT KEEPERS ®

In these months of Spring, doing regular exercises, and staying fit and active is even more important for seniors. As you read this newsletter, pay attention to the importance of early detection and treatment of skin cancer, management of food allergies, effective arthritis relief and low-impact exercise regimes for seniors. We at Comfort Keepers are fortunate to spend a lot of time interacting with the elderly in the comfort of their homes and assist them in their activities of daily living.

Reach out to your local, expert senior home care advisor in Comfort Keepers (973) 707-2310 or (201) 288-2200 to see how we can assist you or your loved one - whether it's just a few hours a week to do some errands, light housekeeping, meal preparation or respite care - so your senior can get appropriate personalized care that he/she deserves. Comfort Keepers is proud to celebrate all the moms this week and wish a hearty Mother's Day Weekend to all our employees, caregivers and the families that we are privileged to serve.

Skin Cancer in Seniors: Development, Identification, and Risk Reduction
Skin cancer is consistently reported to be the most common form of cancer in the United States, affecting more than one million people every year - many of whom are 65 years of age or older. While many are aware of the three types of skin cancer - basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma - the actual development of skin cancer may not be as well known.

Food Allergies: Detection and Management for Seniors
In theory, it can be easy to confuse food intolerance for a food allergy. The former primarily involves the digestive system and its inability to properly break down certain foods. Food intolerance can cause everything from nausea to bloating and cramps.

Low-Impact Exercises
Staying physically active is important at every stage of our lives, but as we grow older, it becomes especially vital. Engaging in the recommended daily amount of moderate activity has numerous long-term benefits, but it can also improve overall health for those with certain conditions and disabilities.

Fast Facts

The National Cancer Institute estimates that between 40-50% of Americans, 65 years of age or older, will develop some form of skin cancer at least once.

It is estimated that 5-10% of the elderly population is faced with food allergies - but that the prevalence is underestimated and undertreated.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate activity each day of the week, for optimal heart health.
