Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Today we celebrate mothers all around the country and express our heartfelt gratitude for everything they do in our lives, in our families and in our communities. To all the mothers out there, biological mothers, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, single mothers, grandmothers, and mentoring mothers: thank you!
I want to give a special thanks to my mother for everything she imparted in me and for being a great role model for her daughters and sons. As I reflect on this, I think of all the mothers on which we have relied throughout the years to help us take care of her. Nurses, doctors, home attendants, and hospital workers that everyday leave their own families to take care of others. This is especially poignant during this global health pandemic, when our health workers, especially those from our low income, immigrant, Latino, Black and Asian communities are risking life and wellbeing on the frontlines of the battle against the novel coronavirus to take care of us.
We also want to acknowledge those mothers that are staying at home with the enormous added task of protecting and caring for their families against this terrible virus. These are women that without training have had to take on the roles of nurses and teachers as schools have closed and hospitals are unable to take in every sick person. Many of them already burdened by the hardships brought on by poverty and inequality.
While we should always congratulate our mothers and tell them how much we love them, I want to take this opportunity to ask that we renew our commitment to give mothers the respect, support, and equality they deserve every day of the year by making sure they get equal pay, affordable child care, good health care, and recognition for the important role they play in our society at large.

Hoy celebramos a las madres de todo el país y expresamos nuestra sincera gratitud por todo lo que hacen en nuestras vidas, en nuestras familias y nuestras comunidades. A todas las madres, madres biológicas, madres adoptivas, madres guardianes, madres solteras, abuelas y madres mentoras: ¡gracias!
Quiero agradecer en especial a mi madre por todo lo que impartió en mi y por ser un estelar ejemplo para sus hijas e hijos. Al reflexionar sobre ella, pienso en todas las madres de las que nos hemos valido a lo largo de los años para ayudar a cuidarla. Enfermeras, doctoras, asistentes domésticas y trabajadoras de hospitales que todos los días dejan a sus propias familias para cuidar de los demás. Esto es especialmente conmovedor durante esta pandemia mundial de salud, cuando nuestros trabajadores de salud, especialmente aquellos de nuestras comunidades de bajos ingresos, inmigrantes, latinos, negros y asiáticos arriesgan su vida y su bienestar en la línea fronteriza de la batalla contra el nuevo coronavirus para cuidar de nosotros.
También queremos reconocer a las madres que se han quedado en casa con la enorme responsabilidad adicional de proteger y cuidar a sus familias contra este terrible virus. Estas son mujeres que sin habérseles entrenado han tenido que asumir el papel de enfermeras y maestras, ya que las escuelas han cerrado y los hospitales no han podido admitir a todos los enfermos. Muchas de estas madres ya son agobiadas por las dificultades causadas por la pobreza y la desigualdad.
Mientras siempre debemos felicitar a nuestras madres y decirles cuánto las amamos, quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para pedirles que renovemos nuestro compromiso de brindarles a las madres el respeto, apoyo y equidad que se merecen todos los días del año. Asegurémonos de que reciban remuneración justa por su trabajo, acceso a cuidado infantil asequible, buen seguro médico y apreciación por el importante papel que desempeñan en nuestra sociedad.
