January Newsletter

Welcome to 2017 - May it Be Our Best Year Yet!

I love the "fresh start" feeling of a brand new year, and today here in eastern Pennsylvania it is a bright, sunny, seasonably brisk day - the perfect kind of day to brush off the cobwebs of the old year and start off a fresh new year.

In honor of this bright new beginning year, here at Conversational Threads, we have a bright new beginning program for all of you we hope you will love -

Our new Conversational Threads Fiber Arts Studio Loyalty Club!

Conversational Threads is closed for the New Year's holiday today, but starting tomorrow when we open and all the days thereafter, when you shop at Conversational Threads you can pick up your Loyalty Club Punch Card, and here's how it works:

For every $25 in full-priced yarn you purchase, you will receive one punch on your Loyalty Card.  A full card of 10 punches earns you $25 off your full-priced merchandise purchase on your next visit to Conversational Threads.

It's that simple! We are very excited about this new program and hope you will be as well.  You can read all the details on our website.

Vogue Knitting Live!
Bus Trip
The bus to Vogue Knitting Live! in New York City on Saturday, January 14th, has only one seat left available.  Call the shop if you would like to sign up.

Also, for each person on the bus, I will have  discounted ($10) wristbands for entrance into the show available for purchase on the bus, so no need to purchase them ahead of time or to wait in line at the show.  Full price of the wristbands is $20, so our price on the bus is 50% off.
Upcoming Classes
Last Minute Super Bulky Moebius Cowl with Mary
Tuesday, January 10th
1:00PM - 3:00PM
Tuesday, January 10th
6:30PM - 8:30PM
Cost - $20.00

This super-bulky Moebius Cowl can be completed in just a few hours and only requires one skein of yarn. This is a great class for both beginning and advanced knitters. The only skills required are knitting and purling.

A Moebius is a continuous surface with only one side and one edge. It is a two dimensional object that can only exist in a three dimensional space. It is a perfect shape for knitting and requires a rather clever and unusual cast-on.

In this class, students will learn the moebius cast on made popular by knitting innovator, Cat Bordhi. As a bonus, Mary will demonstrate two ways to complete the cowl: Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bindoff (great for toe up socks too!) and an I-cord bindoff.

Supplies: One skein of super bulky yarn like Malabrigo Rasta (150g/90 yards) - come early if you’d like help choosing yarn!    Size US 15 circular needles at least 47” long - Knitters Pride Interchangeable needles are perfect for this technique.

Saturday, January 21st

1:00PM - 4:00PM

Cost $20.00

If you have ever found yourself interested in weaving baskets, join us for an afternoon as we create this Square to Round storage basket. This sweet basket is 4 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches by 5 inches. Class participants will learn basic weaving skills as we make this useful basket suitable for filling with a mug and tea bags or soaps for Valentine gift giving; or for displaying a plant on a windowsill. The class is limited to six participants.
Please bring a scissors, tape measure, and a pencil.

Learn the Twigg Stitch
with Vicki Twigg

Saturday, January 28th
1:00PM - 4:00PM

Cost - $55.00

Vicki is back with another session of her very popular class!

Learn to create a unique fabric with a different color each side!

Then, when you are ready, try out any of a wide range of patterns and stitches from the stitch dictionary in the Twigg stitch book (bring your own, purchase one via download, or buy one at the workshop from Vicki for $25) to make a scarf or shawl.  There is plenty of room to customize your own unique piece.

The class is in 2 stages:  First, you will be learning the basic technique. For this you will need 2 colors of the same type of yarn with enough contrast to tell them apart. Sport or medium weight that is fairly smooth is the best yarn to use for learning and for experimentation.  You also will need the recommended size needles for the yarn.

Second, for the project, Vicki would suggest using 2 colors of your favorite thickness of yarn. Bear in mind that Twigg stitch knits up a little thicker than single yarn rib and it takes up to 1.5 times as much yarn as you would use for regular knitting (half each of 2 yarns). You also again will need the recommended size needles for the yarn (and a size larger and smaller if you want to experiment with the texture).

Skill Level:  You need a good knowledge of basic knitting skills, however the key to doing Twigg stitch is in how you hold and use the yarns. You will begin with holding one yarn in each hand so learning to knit with your 'other' hand is useful (only knit is needed for the left hand) and you can move on to holding both yarns in the same hand for those who prefer.

Call the shop to sign up for this class soon, as space is limited!
