The Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) presents Against the Grain: The Stories We Tell Ourselves at the Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos. This group exhibition brings together work from contemporary artists who challenge and explore the complicated nature of record creation, in the contexts of both institutional archives and the emotional preservation of memory.


Don't miss the Opening Reception of this thought-provoking exhibition on Wednesday, January 17th, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, at the Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos.

JANUARY 20TH - BRONX MEMOIR PROJECT WINTER SERIES

THE MAGICAL LIVES OF COMMON THINGS

 

The next virtual Bronx Memoir Project Workshop Series, The Magical Lives of Common Things, will take place on Saturdays between January 20th and February 10th from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM via Zoom.


In this free four-part creative writing workshop led by Orlando Ferrand, participants will explore breathing life into memorable items, revealing personal narratives through diverse perspectives, and crafting memoirs with dual perspectives.

JANUARY 25TH & FEBRUARY 1ST - YOUTH ARTS ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM WORKSHOPS - LONGWOOD ART GALLERY @ HOSTOS

Silence is Violence

Thu., January 25th, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM


This free workshop, led by Neil Constantine, showcases the power of collective action in advancing social change through the creation of protest signs. This exercise builds portals between expressions and actions, using mixed media elements.


Someone You Love - Someone You __

Thu., February 1st, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM


In this free workshop, Neil Constantine guides participants in exploring the materiality of destroying hate through a memory exercise that pays tribute to loved ones while indirectly using those hated to contruct lessons for a better tomorrow.

Youth Arts Engagement Program workshops welcome participants between the ages of 12-24. Pizza, light refreshments, and a MetroCard will be provided. Space is limited. RSVP required.

BECOME A GRANTS PANELIST

BCA 2024 GRANT CYCLE

BCA seeks artists, arts professionals, and nonprofit and community leaders to serve as panelists for our 2024 and future grant cycles.


Grants panelists review and score applications, provide invaluable panelist comments, and recommend recipients for funding. They play a key role in the grant process, and their knowledge and expertise are crucial in shaping how funds are distributed. Potential panelists from all boroughs are welcome to apply, as BCA’s different grant programs require panelists from in and outside of the Bronx. BCA supports panel diversity in all forms: age, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, artistic discipline, location, etc.


Selected panelists will be contacted during grant season (fall/winter). All panelists will receive a modest fee.

Blanka Amezkua is the artist behind AAA3A, an artist-run space in the South Bronx crafting living room occurrences, face-to-face exchanges, meals, dialogue, workshops, residencies, and art in the former home of the Bronx Blue Bedroom Project (BBBP). Learn more.


Erika Shallcross is the artist behind Ageless, a series dedicated to empowering those in their golden years through the art of photography. The project's goal is to capture stunning, evocative images that highlight and draw out each subject's beauty, wisdom, and confidence. View the series.
