Pongal Greetings

Happy New Year to all our wonderful sponsors and supporters. In a break with tradition our sponsored children have sent Pongal cards rather than Christmas cards as our Trustees, both in India and the UK, feel it is more appropriate to embrace a festival which means so much to the village of Kovalam.

Pongal Festival is related to farming and fishing and celebrates the harvest of land and sea. This harvest festival is known by various different names and celebrated all over India. In Tamil Nadu, all the Tamil people - Hindus and all farmers and fishermen, whether they are Muslim or Christian, celebrate Pongal festival. Pongal festival is celebrated worldwide by people of Tamil Nadu descent.

This year Pongal falls on 15 January. It is a three day festival, with schools and businesses closed. It is a happy, noisy, colourful festival very much enjoyed by everyone in Kovalam.

Bhogi

The day before Pongal starts is one of cleaning and renewal. People clean their homes, throw away old things and light bonfires to welcome positivity.

Pongal (main day)

Rice, milk, and jaggery are cooked in a decorated pot. When it boils over, people say “Pongalo Pongal” and pray to the Sun God.

Mattu Pongal

A day to thank cows and bulls. Cattle are washed, decorated and special prayers are offered.

Kaanum Pongal

On the last day of Pongal families visit relatives, spend time together and strengthen relationships.

With love and Pongal greetings
