Anike Allen, Sheldon ISD STEM Coordinator
As Sheldon ISD prepares for its April 26 C-STEM Challenge Day, we're highlighting just a few of the incredible teachers who are hard at work preparing for the upcoming event. In less than a decade, Sheldon has grown their C-STEM schools to 10.
Currently in her 16th year in education, Anike Allen began as 7th/8th grade science teacher then became a STEM science teacher when Sheldon ISD began is STEM program eight years ago. She was then promoted to STEM Specialist and has served as a STEM Coordinator for four years. She is responsible for the Instructional and Programming components at the district's two middle schools. We took some time to learn about her experience teaching STEM.
Q: What interested you in becoming a STEM Coordinator?
A: Science is my jam! As I learned about the vast opportunities in STEM, STEM integration, and a fascination for how technology grows, I knew I was on the right path. I became interested in the authentic learning environments cultivated by STEM and project-based learning.
Q: What does your role involve? A: Our 6-8th grade academy is a project-based learning environment where I design projects and STEM challenges, and coach teachers as they do the same. Culture is a foundation in our Academy, and it is my task and goal to ensure programs we implement or participate in build culture, expose students to STEM careers, and develop 21st-century skills. I also support the high schools' PTECH/STEM program and STEM integration around the district as needed.
Q: What's been the most rewarding part of partnering with C-STEM for you and/or your students?
A: The most rewarding part of partnering with C-STEM is to see eager Sheldon kiddos show up on competition day proud of their teamwork and ready to WIN!
