2022 Amberley Village Highlights
|
|
Each year, Amberley Village staff compiles a highlight video to recap the year in review. 2021 brought with it a continuation of the pandemic, cicadas, and the loss of some of those dearest to us.
But together, we celebrated some outstanding citizens, launched a new website, and held several events. We kicked off our Accelerated Streets Program and made improvements around the Village, including updated signage, new trash receptacles at the Municipal Walking Track and a kiosk at Amberley Green. We rolled out new monthly banners and elected a new council.
Most of all, we stuck together through the challenges and our future is looking bright! Thank you, Amberley Village residents, for making this such an amazing community in which to live, work and play!

Holiday Luncheon Reunites Staff with Retirees
|
|
Amberley Village staff and retirees were treated to an all-staff holiday luncheon hosted by one of its residents (who wishes to remain anonymous, and), who has been feeding Village employees or more than 30 years to thank them for all they do. Retirees continue to be invited for the holiday lunch as the years go by, so imagine how the guest list has grown!
This year was the first time in two years that the event was able to be held in person due to COVID-19, and it was great to see so many former staff in-house for this festive event. All of us at Amberley Village truly appreciate this annual opportunity to take a break to come together, celebrate, share delicious food, remember good times past and make some more wonderful memories!

Bradford Pear: Combatting An Invasive Species
|
|
The Bradford Pear will be banned in Ohio beginning in 2024. Their widespread use as a cross-pollinator with other pear varieties has resulted in clustered growth which squeezes out native plants.
While regulations will not impact trees already planted in your yard, and no round-up of existing trees is planned, the goal is to encourage Ohians to choose native species and stop the flow of this pretty - but greedy - tree.
|
|
The Bradford Pear tree has now become a troublesome tree in the Cincinnati area, due to their weak structure, and ability to be broken in half by a mild breeze. They are also susceptible to damage by rain or snow. Bradford Pear trees have a lifespan of only 20 years, but weather conditions may cause them to die long before that time. Here are some of issues with the Bradford Pear:
-Their blossoms smell really bad, and the odor has been compared to that of rotting fish.
-Fire Blight – This is a bacterial disease which shows up first as branch and tree cankers which are areas of dead bark that appear in the spring. The cankers will excrete a tan ooze which turns to a darker color when it is exposed to the air. This disease attacks open flowers turning them black and causing them to wilt. Pruning the infected areas is a job for professional tree expert. If the pruning is not done properly, then the disease can spread to other areas of the tree. The pruning equipment must also be disinfected. Mild to warm temperatures promote the ideal conditions for this bacterial disease to grow. It is best to not fertilize the trees with nitrogen fertilizer or prune the tree during this kind of weather. Doing so will only encourage the growth of this bacteria.
-Entomosporium Leaf Spot – This is a fungal disease and it usually develops during the cool temperatures and wet weather. This disease will show up as small, bright red spots on the surfaces of the leaves. If the infection is small, then it will be an eyesore more than anything else. If the infection is severe, the result can be leaf drop and damage to the internal structure of the tree. A professional tree expert should evaluate the appropriate response to this disease.
-Excessive Watering – Avoid excessive watering because too much moisture can increase fungal growth.
-Bradford Pear Trees Can Reproduce – When newer Callery pear cultivars pollinate Bradford Pears trees, the trees will produce seeds which may grow into trees that will crowd out other trees.
-Extensive Root Structure – The root structure can absorb so much moisture that surrounding plant life may die. This is also a serious problem when removing the tree from the yard.

No Posting on Utility Poles in the Village:
Even for Lost Pets
|
|
A recent increase in the posting of flyers on utility poles throughout the Village is cause for reminder that these are the property of the utility companies, and are not authorized posting places.
Social media outlets are more effective resources, especially for locating lost pets. The Amberley Village Nextdoor site in particular boasts the largest number of resident participants, and maintains a very active community.
Kindly leave the utility poles to the utility companies, and utilize services such as those linked below. Lost pets can also be reported to Amberley Village Police-Fire Department at 513-531-2040

Amberley Village is committed to keeping lines of communication open and accessible between residents and government officials. In this spirit, Amberley Village has incorporated Village-issued email addresses for Councilmembers into its digital communications protocol.
These measures unify the format, making it easier for residents to send a message when an issue comes to mind. The member's first initial followed by last name (no space) @amberleyvillage.org will get your message on its way to members of the Amberley Village Council.
