Come to the County Fair

The Marin County Fair is our biggest outreach opportunity and in need of coordinators to fulfill our mission to educate the public.

There are many opportunities to choose from. Have fun working with other MMGs to coordinate speakers, help recruit docents, assist with the plant sale or manage Children’s Day activities. Specifics for each task are well laid out by the previous Fair Team so you don’t need to reinvent the wheel! Choose an area that interests you.

Shadow the Tomato “Grow Head”

The Tomato Market team is looking for someone to shadow the grow head this year, with the goal that they will be ready to lead the process for the 2025 tomato grow. This is a big job, overseeing the activities of the day to day grow team and coordinating with the heads of the seeding, transplanting and transporting teams.

This year we are planning to raise 4,500 tomato plants in the greenhouse at the Falkirk Cultural Center. Core activities will take place from March 10 through April 20. Leading the grow is truly gratifying, watching the seedlings as they sprout, produce their first true leaves, move into 3.5 inch pots as they mature and then grow at a breakneck pace, all under the nurturing care of the grow team.

Sound interesting? If you want to learn more about this leadership role, contact Peter Norton.

Garden Walks Program is Seeking New and Return Walkers

The Garden Walks program is a joint effort between Marin Water and Marin Master Gardeners and is an excellent way to work directly with Marin citizens from all areas of the county. The first part of each walk is a tour guided by the garden walk volunteers of the property irrigation system. The following part is to address concerns and questions about the existing landscaping.

We cover a wide spectrum of topics. Native plants, compost, irrigation and water conservation are just a few examples. In addition, we are ambassadors to the UC Master Gardener program guiding people to find the resources they need for their garden challenges.

The minimum volunteer commitment is 5 walks per year averaging about 90 minutes per walk. A number of our walkers have found these appointments very rewarding going well past the minimum.
