Ancient Medicine Made Modern

The Longevity Insights of 2025

Longevity is reshaping wellness across medicine, tech, beauty, and how we live together. Lifestyle—not genes—drives most aging outcomes through movement, sleep, recovery, environment, and meaning. This post explores emerging trends, while I continue to favor gentle, hormetic, low-risk habits over excessive testing, vague advice, or unproven interventions.

Looking older isn’t just cosmetic—it’s predictive. In older twins, perceived age strongly predicted survival, physical and cognitive function, and even telomere length. How old you look may quietly reveal how well your biology is aging.

Acupuncture Studies: Mechanisms for Brain Protection and Mechanisms for Insomnia Treatment

New research clarifies how acupuncture may calm neuroinflammation by activating brain TRPV1 channels, triggering calcium signaling that restores immune balance. This mechanism links acupuncture to conditions like depression and Alzheimer’s, where inflammation, stress, and autonomic imbalance drive disease—providing a concrete biological pathway for acupuncture’s clinical effects in modern humans today.

Acupuncture and Insomnia

  • This rat study explored how acupuncture improves insomnia by activating the α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7-nAChR), a key vagus-nerve–related receptor discussed in Radical Resilience.
  • Acupuncture at PC6 and ST36 for 5 days normalized abnormal brain activity linked to poor sleep.
  • It increased firing of inhibitory (GABAergic) neurons in the thalamic reticular nucleus, a sleep-regulating brain region.
  • When α7-nAChR was chemically blocked, these benefits disappeared.
  • This supports a vagal–immune–neural mechanism for acupuncture’s sleep effects.

Ear Seeds and Anti-Aging Skin Care

Acupressure Ear Seeds Having a Moment.

Ear seeds—tiny acupressure beads rooted in Chinese medicine—have gone mainstream, spotted on celebrities, athletes, and fashion crowds. Promoted for stress and addiction support, evidence remains limited. As stylish “wearable wellness” trends rise, acupuncturists urge realistic claims and proper guidance.

Peter Attia, a physician podcaster, author and anti-aging enthusiast ;

Peter Attia’s recent podcast with two dermatologists cut through skincare hype. Their core advice: prevent damage first. Daily sunscreen (preferably mineral), consistent retinoid use to preserve collagen, simple moisturization, and optional vitamin C do most of the work. Sun exposure accelerates aging at every skin layer, while social-media-driven cosmetic excess often does more harm than good.

How many steps to aim for?

Walking just 7,000 steps a day lowers the risk of developing more than a half dozen medical conditions as well as premature death, according to the researchers.

Mortality dropped nearly half in the 7,000-step walkers. Risks for depression and type 2 diabetes also fell, although by less than for the other conditions.

It’s long been known that physical activity, including moderate-intensity walking, benefits health. But this is the first time researchers were able to correlate step goals with the wide range of preventive health outcomes.

7 medications that alter the gut microbiome for years.

  • Large Estonian biobank study shows some medications alter gut microbiome for years.
  • Seven common drug classes, including antibiotics and antidepressants (antibiotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, beta-blockers, metformin, PPIs (antacids), benzodiazepines, showed persistent changes long after stopping.
  • Observational data can’t prove causation, but reinforces choosing medications thoughtfully:
  • first, do no harm.

Microneedling vs. Dermarolling The details Matter!

RF microneedling and some lasers can go too deep, risking loss of subdermal fat and thinner skin—especially with age. Keeping needles under 1 mm may be safer. I favor low-depth dermarolling, quality devices, and science-backed topicals, aligning with hormesis and a “do no harm” approach.
