Happy New Year!

Here's hoping that 2020 brings you peace and good cheer - and plenty of opportunity to get out on the trail.

And the best news is that spring is now on the horizon. Such a wonderful time of year for walking: t here's something about hiking in the cool breezes and warm sunshine that only spring can provide.

Whether it's fledgling birds and wildlife, or blossoming gardens and hedgerows, once we hit the end of March, I always feel that there is so much to enjoy, whether in the British Isles, Europe or the USA.

We are putting the finishing touches to our Spring Walks Guide right now and it will be available very soon. But in the meantime, here are some suggestions for early season Walks that offer some delightful springtime treats.

So, shake off those winter blues and book your favorite spring Walk now!

Best wishes,

puffins
Puffins on the Northumbria coast

With the arrival of spring, the ground is thawing, flowers are blossoming, and nature is jumping back to life.

Take advantage of all this natural beauty by heading out onto the trail.

When waterfalls are at their cascading best, the changing light captures epic vistas and birds and animals are raising their young. The longer, warmer days mean there's no better time to explore the world on foot.

Britain has some of the most important seabird colonies in Europe.
Watching guillemots, razorbills, gannets, cormorants and fulmars
is one of Britain's top wildlife experiences. You don't just watch a seabird colony; you smell it and hear it too!

And who doesn't love a puffin?  Their gorgeous little faces, at once both comical and melancholy and we may be lucky and get a glimpse of a chick, called a puffling!

Where there are seabirds, there are often seals too - always a delight to spot.

Beautiful wildflowers in Arizona
This season is a time of days getting longer and the spring sunshine bringing growth and greenery everywhere with buds bursting and leaves unfolding. Birdsong reaches a peak and many flowers appear, in turn attracting insect-life, including bees and butterflies. Even in the desert, the rains prompt amazing displays of color!

Whale-watching in The Azores, with Pico Island in the background

Way out in the mid-Atlantic, spring arrives early and our new Walk in The Azores makes the most of nature being wide-awake.

May brings the migrations of the baleen whales and whale-watching in these Portuguese islands still uses the old expertise of the lookouts in hilltop towers to spy these lovely mammals.

Direct flights from the US east coast make it easy to get here in under five hours.

** Why not head onwards to mainland Portugal and take our Algarve Coast Walk back-to-back? We'll treat you to a night's accommodation in between the two.
