January 2026 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year and welcome to 2026! Yesterday, I was nominated by my board colleagues to serve as the Chair of the Board of Supervisors for the year ahead. I am honored to take on this role, and it is not lost on me that I am the first Latina Chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. I am proud to serve the residents of the First District and the entire county, and I look forward to guiding our board in 2026.

Among my priorities as Chair are to continue to support our most vulnerable communities with a focus on food security and housing, especially in the face of economic uncertainty and changing circumstances at the state and federal levels. Additionally, I am focused on ensuring that our county is prepared for any disaster, be it fire, earthquake, flood, or another emergency, and that our infrastructure is resilient both in times of crisis and not. I am looking forward to long-standing projects reaching new milestones - the reopening of Larson Park after its first phase of renovations is right around the corner - as well as to whatever new opportunities that come our way.

I hope you'll continue reading for the latest in the First District, and I'm wishing you a wonderful year ahead!

In service,

County Updates

2017 Sonoma Complex Fires Memorial

In December, the Board of Supervisors took the next steps towards creating a memorial to honor the victims of the 2017 Sonoma Complex Fires. We approved agreements with an award-winning landscape sculptor, Cliff Garten, and with the City of Santa Rosa for a memorial to be placed in Nagasawa Community Park in Fountaingrove. This has been a very intentional, community driven process, and I want to thank the members of the Fire Memorial Task Force established by the Board of Supervisors for their work evaluating locations and selecting an artist.

That being said, the opportunity to get involved is far from over. Beginning early in 2026, we will start a 16-week community engagement and design process, and I encourage you to lend your voice. The 2017 fires had a profound and enduring impact on our community, and I believe that we can come together through art to reflect on our loss, our hope, and our resilience. You can visit Creative Sonoma's website at the link below to learn more and sign up to stay engaged in future meetings, surveys, and more!

Sonoma County Equitable Electric Vehicle Charging Plan

The County is currently working on an Equitable Electric Vehicle Charging Plan, funded by a grant from the California Department of Transportation, to evaluate and identify priority areas for new charging stations. The goal is to identify where charging infrastructure is most needed and ensure it serves both urban and rural communities, with particular attention to disadvantaged and underserved areas. An online survey and interactive map is available through January 31st where you can explore proposed EV charging locations and suggest new ones. Whether you are a current EV driver or not, I would encourage you to take a look at the map and share your thoughts.

The Equitable EV Charging Plan aligns with our county’s climate and transportation goals, and is integral to ensuring all residents benefit. Visit the link below to share your feedback via the interactive map (and follow the instructions on the left side of the screen!).

Updates to Fence and Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Ordinances at Permit Sonoma

In the spirit of making government work for everyone, to close out our final meetings of 2025 the Board of Supervisors approved two updates, to the Fence Ordinance and Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Ordinance, from Permit Sonoma. While these may seem small, I'm incredibly grateful to our Permit Sonoma staff for taking on these updates that improve services and create better experiences for Sonoma County residents.

The approved updates to the County’s Fence Ordinance streamline permitting and cut the high costs and long wait times residents can face when trying to build or replace a fence. Prior to these changes, most homeowners in unincorporated areas needed a Use Permit for fences taller than three feet in front of their properties or along roadways, which can be cost prohibitive and take months or even years to complete. The updated rules create clear, objective standards for fence height, location, materials and design, and allow many common fence types to move forward with either no permit or a simpler administrative review. I am confident these changes will make fence construction simpler and more affordable while retaining key standards that protect public safety and neighborhood compatibility.

The update to the ADU ordinance will make it easier for residents to build an ADU on their property, and to legalize the ones they may already have. The ordinance aligns County rules with evolving state laws while removing hurdles that can make ADUs complicated or infeasible, including more flexibility in the configurations and combinations of ADUs, allowing lots with single-family dwellings to now have two ADUs of any type, increasing height limits, decreasing parking mandates, and more. Lastly, the new rules implement an updated state law that requires a straightforward path to obtain permits for unauthorized units.

Changing Faces at the County of Sonoma

In December, several of my colleagues took on new roles or retired at the County of Sonoma. Scott Orr was named the Director of Permit Sonoma, after previously serving as the Deputy Director and nearly a decade of service in total at the department. Additionally, Andrea Krout, longtime District Director to Supervisor David Rabbitt, joined the Sonoma County Fair as their Chief Operations Officer. Lastly, Robert Pittman announced his retirement as County Counsel later this month. We are so lucky to have so many incredible staff at our county, and I can't wait to continue working with them in new capacities (or wish them wonderful retirement!).
