YOUTH SPOTLIGHT | GIGI OLIVERSMITH
Do you know someone who deserves to be recognized? Nominate a Youth Spotlight Here
“This is for everyone!” By “this”, Gigi means an opportunity to experience a theater club for young people. By “everyone” she means people with theater experience, people with NO expertise, and those who are curious. The “why” she is doing this is the reason she has been selected as the Youth Spotlight for this month.

Georgianna OliverSmith (Gigi) has been around the stage since she was six years old. It is what feeds her soul, the ability to artistically express herself, feel emotions, and develop her authentic self. Now, as a junior at Battle Mountain High School, she continues to participate in the productions offered by the school. But it’s just not enough.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS | MELINDA BRANDT
Do you know someone who is making a difference in the community and deserves to be recognized? Nominate a Difference Maker Here

A good coach can change a game; a great coach can change a life. Melinda Brandt, head coach of Eagle Valley High School's cross country team, is precisely that coach. Melinda was chosen as this month's difference-maker because she is someone who supports student-athletes to perform at their highest potential and fosters exceptional, well-rounded individuals.

In 2008, Melinda Brandt started the EVHS cross-country program. Melinda has impacted hundreds of athletes since then, beginning with 24 athletes in her first season and reaching a high of 60 student-athletes in one season. Melinda has embraced athletes of all abilities with open arms, promoting a welcoming and safe environment for cross country practice.

VALLEY'S VOICE
Despite all the challenges in 2021, both Valley’s Voice and our For Youth By Youth (FYBY) teams grew in number and cohesiveness. Youth participating in Valley’s Voice (middle & high school) nearly doubled as they grew from 65 to 124. These youth participated in meetings, provided feedback, and are currently working on 5+ passion projects to benefit their fellow youth and the Eagle County community.

The For Youth By Youth team of just four interns planned some incredible events this fall/winter. Starting off a bit slow, our Biking Scavenger Hunt in July had just six attendees. Nevertheless, this dedicated and driven quartet of high school leaders increased event popularity, outreach, and efficiency as they put on three more events. An October Color Run attracted ten attendees, November Gym Night attracted over 75, and a December Movie Night drew in over 50 youth.

Looking forward to 2022, our groups have developed their leadership skills and are excited to continue this fantastic outreach. Kudos Valley’s Voice and FYBY Interns!

COMMUNITIES THAT CARE
Communities That Care is a meaningful effort where you will guide, learn and be of service! We continue recruiting for our teams and workgroups.

Community Outreach and Public Relations Work Group gathered youth participants and experts in the field from Vail Health and Vail Valley Foundation. They started building strong belonging, and enthusiasm soared about ways to reach the community. Currently, the team is discussing the marketing and media aspects of outreach.

Our Strategic Team is working to build support for local laws to prevent substance and alcohol use also convened and inspired us with the youth interest and commitment to deep work of data, policy, and practice that can be channeled and directed to change mindsets! Youth from 15 to 74 years old serve on this team with a feeling of a tribe and brotherhood. Local detectives, sergeants, business owners, and attorneys are guides and facilitators of the work motivating and engaging the youth!

If you would like to join us and become a part of these teams, please contact Tsveti Fuentes at tfuentes@mountainyouth.org.
