From Our Artistic Director

Welcome 2017 and to all the excitement it will bring.  Happy New Year!

The Peterborough Pop Ensemble had a great fall and especially enjoyed presenting our Christmas concert, "The Spirit of Christmas", at Northminster United Church on December 3, 2016.

We were thrilled to sing to a full house and to hear the glorious voices of our audience fill the church with Christmas music.  We loved every moment of this concert and extend our thanks to Dustin Bowers, Music Director at Northminster and accompanist to the Pop Ensemble, and his team for organizing such a wonderful event.

And now the winter months are upon us.  Even though it may be cold outside, our rehearsal room is filled with the warm sounds of songs from the early days of Hollywood and Broadway as we prepare for our matinee concert at Market Hall on February 4th,  "A Delightful Afternoon with Gershwin, Porter and Berlin".  These are the songwriters of a golden age whose songs have become part of the Great American Songbook.

I have found some stunning choral arrangements of classics such as Night and Day, Long Ago and Far Away, You're the Top, I've Got a Crush On You as well as show stoppers like Another Op'nin', Another Show and There's No Business Like Show Business.  We are thrilled to once again be accompanied by some amazing local musicians and, for the first time, a string quartet.  Arranging for string players has been a new and challenging adventure for me.  I am so grateful for all our talented performers.

George Gershwin once said:  "True music must repeat the thought and inspirations of the people and the time."  The haunting melodies and enchanting lyrics of the music composed by these great American composers is not at all like the music of today.  It is music which has stood the test of time - sending messages of love and hope to every generation.  The Peterborough Pop Ensemble is looking forward to sharing this wonderful music with each of you.
I hope to see you in February!

"Delightfully" yours,

 Meet David Hunter

David Hunter joined the tenor section of the Pop Ensemble in 2004.   David loves to sing and, in fact, sings with two other choirs:  The Bonachords and The Mark Street United Church Choir.
David loves most any genre, but prefers music with a good jazz-inspired arrangement.

In our upcoming show his favourite tune is A Foggy Day which most definitely has a jazz driven beat to it.

David loves to listen to music when he drives (he does a lot of travelling for work) and his favourite stations are CBC, BBC and "Oldies (70s/80s)"
David's mom is well known in the musical community of Peterborough. Buddy is a great musical inspiration and mentor.  Her piano teaching, playing and choir directing gave David and his siblings a constant exposure to, and love of, music, which is evident whenever David performs.

"The unique musical challenges and joy of being with such a talented and fun-loving group of performers is what makes being part of the Pop Ensemble a real privilege and such a great experience."  David's easy performance style and clear tenor voice are a great addition to the group!

What is his dream for the Pop Ensemble? It would be to sing the national anthem(s) at the start of an NHL game,(WE are with you in that one David!).

The Best of British Pop
Emerging in the 1950s, British popular music was influenced greatly by North American musical styles but, by the 60's, the unique sound of British artists headed across "the pond" resulting in a renaissance of musical freedom and creativity.  The national appeal of UK artists such as The Hollies, Herman's Hermits, Elton John, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones and the Beatles soon gave way to a phenomenal international success which continues to this day.  Come celebrate the revolution with the members of the Peterborough Pop Ensemble on Saturday, April 22, 2017 as they present "The Best of British Pop".  Showtime is 7:30 p.m. at the historic Market Hall Performing Arts Centre in Peterborough, ON.
