While 2021 was better than 2020, both years were not great for travel. True, a turnaround began in the last half of 2021 with tour companies and cruise lines slowly ramping back up leading to a sense of optimism for 2022. That optimism continues to grow as the new year brings ever expanding offerings from all travel companies. In addition, pent-up demand for travel is exploding. By every metric available, that demand is driving recovery in every sector of the travel industry. In some cases, to be honest, demand is greater than the supply as witnessed by the struggles with the airlines. This too shall pass. Yes, the Omicron variant has proliferated to the point where the CDC has issued a caution about cruise ship travel, yet neither the CDC nor the cruise ship industry have announced plans to halt cruising, and the “conditional sailing order” is set to expire on January 15 to become a voluntary program. We will monitor the current advisory and send an interim email if anything significant changes.
 
The cruise industry was one of the first to endure the effects of Covid-19 shutdowns and has been one of the last to recover. A beneficial result is a dazzling array of incentives to tempt clients to get back onboard. Azamara is offering up to 30% savings and up to $500 onboard credit (OBC) for 2022 sailings booked by March 31, 2022. Some of these cruises include a 7-Night Greece Intensive Cruise, a 10-Night Northern Cities Voyage, a 10-Night Wine and Culture Voyage, and an 8-Night France Intensive Voyage.
 
Royal Caribbean also offers up to 30% off every guest plus up to another $150 off sailings beginning February 4, 2022. The offer includes reduced airfare to Alaska and Europe, free upgrades on select ships, and a bonus $50 OBC for Crown & Anchor Society members. This offer is valid through January 31, 2022. 
 
Princess offers up to 40% savings plus a $100 stateroom OBC on cruises to the Caribbean, Mexico, California Coast, Panama Canal, Hawaii, and Europe. The offer is valid January 11 – January 24, 2022. These fares include the drink package, Wi-Fi and gratuities.
 
Celebrity is offering saving of up to $1200 per person, airfare as low as $799 per person, and is including a drink package, Wi-Fi and Gratuities. Cruises must be booked by February 28, 2022 on voyages departing any time up to March 31, 2023!!!
 
The newest cruise line, Virgin Voyages, is offering discounts on its 3-4 day Caribbean sailings. Their one ship, the Scarlett Lady, has been reviewed to great acclaim and has been named as Cruise Critics, Editors’ Choice, best new ship.
 
Other cruise lines have similar offers. In addition, all cruise lines have extended their Sail with Confidence programs offering travelers the flexibility to cancel up to 48 hours prior to sail date for a 100% Future Cruise Credit. These programs vary from company to company and are ever evolving, but we are here to help you navigate through the offers, the fine print, and the protocols.
 
Speaking of protocols, as we reported on the protocols for travel to Canada last month, we will be reporting on cruise protocols in our March newsletter. We set sail on the Celebrity Constellation, January 24 – February 4, 2022. Our pre-cruise test kits have been received, and we’ll receive a complimentary test prior to disembarkation for our flight home.
