The Big Storm: So Glad to Live in Community!

Just after Christmas, Nevada County—home of Nevada City Cohousing and Wolf Creek Lodge in the Sierra Foothills—had a huge wet snowstorm that knocked out power for most of the county. At first, it was exciting and we focused on shoveling pathways. By the second day a little less so. But so thankful to live in community because my neighbors were jumping into action. In my 34-home community, we found we had three generators, and a team organized to circulate the generators between buildings to get everyone a bit of heat and a quick shower. (our 3 – 6 unit buildings have shared heating/hot water systems that use gas but need electricity to pump the water, and solar hooked into the grid, but no big (expensive) batteries). People shared batteries and solar chargers to keep people’s phones charged, and offered to pick up groceries for those who didn’t want to drive on icy roads. The constant chatter on our email group kept us up to date with information (cell phones worked). Nevertheless, we certainly celebrated when the lights came back on at the end of day three.

It’s hard for me to imagine going thorough crisis of any sort without a community. As my daughter said, “Imagine if you had to shovel a whole driveway by yourself?” Many good neighbors make for light work and lots of resources. Clearly, the weather is telling us we need to build more resilient communities that can get us thorough whatever is coming at us next.

A group of seven people, some of whom are strangers, live together in this palatial home at 225 Dromore Avenue in Winnipeg's Crescentwood neighbourhood.

CoHousing Solutions was working with a forming cohousing group in Winnipeg, Canada, but between the typical challenges of getting a community off the ground, and then the pandemic, launching the 20 – 30 home community they had envisioned eluded them. One thing this pandemic has taught us is that we need to be flexible. When one version of community wasn’t working out, Frances and Jim Woolison pivoted to a shared home model, purchasing one of Winnipeg’s grand older homes with a few others. And they actually got their community faster than it would take to build a larger neighborhood community.

There are many ways to create community and as we head into the New Year, we at CoHousing Solutions are here to support you in finding what works for you. The article below talk more about this Winnipeg shared housing model.

SEEKERS: Are you interested to learn more about cohousing? Are you are looking for a community in a particular part of the US? National Cohousing Open House Day is a fantastic opportunity to visit them! Some communities are offering LIVE EVENTS, please see community specific covid precautions. Others are offering VIRTUAL EVENTS, says one attendee of previous year’s open house day “I took full advantage of the move to zoom and visited eight communities in one day; this year, I am helping to host … “

COMMUNITIES: An Open House is a great way for a community to share about their specific community, what makes them unique and what cohousing life is like. We encourage INDIVIDUAL COMMUNITIES to host a virtual meet and greet, post a tour video, give tours of your property or host an outdoor gathering. Multiple Communities representing a REGIONAL GROUP may want to host an online panel discussion or a introduction to cohousing talk at a public venue.
