Reasons to Paint This Winter

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer and colder, beat the winter blues by brightening up your home! Here are three reasons to paint your home this winter:

Colors impact on our mood:

Color is recognized to have a significant effect on the way we feel.

Employ color strategically in your home - using yellows to inspire optimism, reds to bring energy to a room, greens for balance, blues for clarity and browns for warmth - and you'll draw energy and comfort from its walls all winter long.

It's the ideal temperature:

Wintertime is generally less humid than other times of the year, and its cool temperatures make paint dry better. Now's the perfect time to tackle those interior paint jobs you've been putting off for far too long - after all, it is too cold out there to do anything else!

It's one less job you'll have to do come summer!

Just be mindful that when applying paint or primer during winter, wait until the surface temperature is around five degrees above the dew point and allow extra drying time in between coats, particularly for darker pigments. Wouldn't you rather enjoy the warmer weather than spend it indoors taking care of odd jobs?

Glass Gem Picture Magnets

Now that the holidays are behind us, it's time to clear out the cards. But sometimes parting with those cheerful greetings is hard. Instead of stashing them in a box that will collect dust in the back of your closet, select your favorite parts for repurposing into cute and helpful magnets that you can enjoy all year round. Along with keeping you organized, your favorite people will be on display at home or the office. These cute magnets cost only a few dollars to make!

What You'll Need:

  • Holiday cards
  • Clear accent gems
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • Magnet tape
  1. Gather your holiday cards, and focus on small pictures of your friends and family or colorful and sparkling areas. You can find clear accent gems ($3) at your local craft or dollar store.
  2. Place a gem over the selected area of the card, and trace around it using black marker.
  3. Cut away the section from the card, and coat with Mod Podge, which is strong binding craft glue that dries clear. Coat the flat side of the gem too.
  4. Continue cutting and gluing gems until you have a collection. Allow to dry for several hours before the next step.
  5. Cut the magnet tape, which you can find at your local craft store or home goods store, in small sections and adhere it to the back of the gems. Now you're ready for keeping your important notes on your fridge or magnet board right where you want them!

Simple Way to Clean Your Glass Stovetop

Have you ever wondered how to clean your glass cooktop? Baking soda is one of the best home made cleaning DIY tools you can possibly use - and cheap too!

All you need is:

  • Bowl & Hot Soapy Water
  • Baking Soda
  • A Cleaning Rag
  • Gloves

First, fill a bowl with hot tap water and mix it with some dish soap. Submerge the rag in the bowl and get it wet.

Apply baking soda in a generous amount all over the affected area.

Now, pull out that hot, soapy rag out of the bowl and squeeze half the water out. You want it to be soggy, not sopping. Lay the rag out across the stovetop and let it sit for 15 minutes.

Once the time is up, swirl the rag around in circles, using the baking soda paste as a gentle scrub. Then dry up the surface and shine it up with a cloth. Good as new!

You could also repeat the steps to achieve improved results. You may also leave the rag on for longer, depending on how bad it is. Get it to sparkle and shine by spritzing the surface with a little bit of vinegar, and wipe clean.
