Tonight 7:00 pm - Watch Night Service
John Wesley believed that Methodists and all Christians, should reaffirm their covenant with God annually, so he created a service in which an individual renews his/her covenant with God.

In 1755 Wesley held his first covenant service using words written earlier by Richard Alleine. Wesley published this service in a pamphlet in 1780, and this form was used without alteration for nearly a century in England. It has been modified somewhat in more recent years.

The covenant hymn, "Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine," was written for this service by Charles Wesley. The service is included in The Book of Worship under the title "An Order of Worship for Such as Would Enter Into or Renew Their Covenant with God--For Use in a Watch Night Service, on the First Sunday of the Year, or Other Occasion."

This covenant service is often used in United Methodism as a Watch Night Service on New Year's Eve. The covenant service is observed in some local churches on New Year's Day or on the first Sunday in January. The service focuses on the Christian's renewing the covenant of response to the grace of God in Christ.

Pender's Watch Night Service will be December 31 at 7:00 pm
Sunday, January 3, 2021 at 9 and 11:15 am
Epiphany Sunday

Rev. Will White will Interview
the Three Wise Guys.

Christmas is not just one day, but a season of twelve days from sunset Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) through Epiphany.

The twelfth day of Christmas, Epiphany, an even more ancient Christian celebration than Christmas, originally focused on the nativity, God's incarnation (God made flesh) in the birth of Jesus Christ and Christ's baptism. Today, it commemorates the visiting of the Christ Child by the Magi (Wise Men) with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020
6:30 pm - Special Christmas Music Concert

Our concert featured a variety of styles, as well as both familiar and new Christmas music.

7:00 pm ~ Blended Worship Livestream

A service that included lessons, carols, sermon, and candlelight.

At the close of the service, we heard “Silent Night”, as a candle representing every Pender UMC family will be lighted.

The benediction was an invitation to participate in a drive through Nativity.

8:30 pm ~ “Drive Through Nativity”

On a looped course through our church’s parking lot, we drove past a Nativity scene of Pender UMC members, staff, and friends. This drive through event was safe and fun way to experience the joy of the Savior’s birth.

Pastor Will lived-streamed the event for those who couldn't get out.
From last Sunday, December 27
The Fifth Sunday in Advent

Rev. Will White continued his
Worship Series “Company’s Coming”.

The Fifth Sermon was
"Enjoying the Company"

Based on Scripture

There is an inevitable let down after Christmas. This is December 27, only two days after the day that most are still digesting.

The other phenomenon that normally occurs at this time is that folks are starting to depart; families are returning home; people are going back to work. That may all be different now, even as we will still be recovering or enduring the pandemic.

But there is still a shift in thinking, in focus, in direction in these Christmastide worship experiences.

That is why we chose to continue the series through the Sundays after Christmas.
Prayer Requests
"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Jesus Christ. " 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Pender is a church committed to the power of prayer. Our "prayer chain" is a group of church members constantly in prayer for the needs of our congregation. To make your prayer needs known, you may email the prayer chain by clicking here to send an email to our group of prayer warriors.
Woman of the Year
We realize that 2020 has been hard on us all; however, have you noticed that despite the challenges some of our Pender family have risen above and continued to serve our church tirelessly?

We would like to recognize a Pender woman that you think has faithfully served Pender to further God's kingdom.

Please include your nominee’s name and reasons why you think this person deserves to receive the woman of the year award. Previous recipients are ineligible to receive the award again.

Please click the link below and complete the form to submit your nomination.
January 12 - Pender Hill School Reopening
Pender Hill School will open on January 12, 2021 - May 28, 2021. Our school will be on Phase 2 guidelines, because we are under the restrictions of the Methodist Bishop. She is very cautious and keeping us to a limited opening for safety reasons. This means that we will have 3 classes with limited student space.
Sanctity of Life
Pender UMC partners with Sanctity of Life Ministries, which shares the love of Jesus with those in our community seeking help in the midst of a crisis pregnancy. One facet of the ongoing support clients receive is SLM’s "Earn While You Learn" program. Mothers receive a gift of classes so that they can learn how to care for their babies and then receive items they need to prepare for their baby's homecoming.

Would you like to be a part of helping these young mothers prepare for their baby’s birth? What better way to offer a tangible expression of God’s love as they are told of the birth of His Son Jesus and of his great love for them?

Below is a list of items that Sanctity of Life is in need of at the moment. Will you please consider purchasing one or more to donate?

Diapers (specifically size 4, 5, & 6)
Similac Baby Formula
Gift Cards (Walmart, Target, etc.)
Daily Bread devotional books for clients
Newborn mittens
Baby sleep sacks (since blankets can be a choking hazard for babies in their cribs, we want to give out something else that can keep the baby warm!)

For your convenience, here is a link to SLM’s Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/28ZIHQ2EQ2KN1?ref_=wl_share

If you prefer to shop in person, you may drop the items off at Pender UMC’s office and Laura Hugo will collect them to bring to Sanctity of Life Ministries.
Community Outreach
Thank you Pender for your generosity in giving to the Santa's Ride toy collection and the book and clothing collection for Greenbriar East Elementary School!

The police officers and school counselors were thrilled to receive the donations!

FOOD DONATIONS:

Thank you Pender for your continued generous donations of food for WFCM and the Blessing Box in our parking lot!  Please note these guidelines for donations:
  • Donate only non-perishable items. The donations are not checked daily, and items such as fresh produce or bread products have been going bad before they can be used.
  • Do not put glass containers in the Blessing Box as they can freeze and shatter during winter months.
  • Check the expiration or sell-by dates on food items and do not donate any that are past the date marked.

Thank you for your generous support of all our local outreach projects. Please contact Ann Hines if you have any questions.
Amazon Smile

Shop at smile.amazon.com/ch/54-0856924 and Amazon donates with every order, gift for someone else or for yourself!
