The Exelon Foundation STEM Leadership Academies have finished, but we are still enjoying hearing from participants...
An Excerpt from Elena Fernandez
A simple connection had led me to the academy. A girl from my high school had a presentation about her time with Exelon during a recruitment event I was volunteering at. Turns out our mothers were Facebook friends, which gave me the privilege and honor to be connected to this wonderful summer program where I could express my interests in STEM with a community of powerful and ambitious young women like me.
My time at the academy started in the summer of 2020 (COVID year I know). Although it was during the peak of the pandemic, I knew I wanted to do more with and for the academy so, I applied to be a mentor for this past summer’s academy. Once I got that acceptance email, I knew it was going to be an event of a lifetime. Being a participant was great and all, but it mostly made me realize how much more I wanted to strive for. It brought out the leadership that I didn’t even know I had in me.
Being on junior staff for this summer’s academy was one of the many highlights of the summer of 2022 and it made me feel more comfortable with the daunting image of my freshman year at college that was coming my way. I was able to leave something behind in my hometown and become an inspiration, a role model, but mostly a friend to so many amazing and determined young women. If anything, these girls inspired me more than anything and it was a privilege to be their mentor. There were many laughs from joy, gasps in awe, and cries of bittersweetness, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I was gifted so many opportunities throughout my time with Exelon that will jumpstart my career in STEM in many ways, but the thing that I will remember most of all and keep close to my heart were the people I met and the memories I made.
