All successful restaurateurs start with a well developed business plan that will be requested by any financial institution, investor, or landlord. The first half of the seminar will review the steps and organizational techniques needed to write a compelling plan for a restaurant that includes: 
  • Articulating the core concept
  • The importance of location
  • Sample menus
  • History of owners
  • Understanding the target customer through demographics
  • Presenting a strong marketing plan by defining the business' positioning and niche through competitive analysis

Instructor Sandy Markus has been in entrepreneurial environments her whole professional career in corporate divisions, venture capital funded start-ups, and launched her own small business. She has been a lead SBDC Advisor and Trainer for startup businesses for six years.

Sandy brings a unique understanding and experience in and with start-ups, marketing and business development in the service, retail, wholesale, software-as-a-service, education, and nonprofit sectors.

Enhance your QuickBooks skills with this expert-led seminar. Having an accurate, easily accessible set of books is vital for business. This course will allow the business owner to avoid common mistakes other entrepreneurs tend to make. With this course, participants will learn much needed bookkeeping terms to understand the differences between debts, credits, subsidiary ledgers, journals, etc. Participants will also learn to create a company, set-up and use charts of accounts, create and produce invoices, track your payables, create a budget and estimates, and generate and understand financial reports.

Prerequisite: participants must bring their own laptop with Quickbooks installed
Anita Johnson is the founder of Money Wisdom for Women, a radio host of Anita Talks Money, a contributor to FOX40 News and Good Day Sacramento, and writes a column for The Sacramento Observer. Restaurant Specialist, Louise Dawson will discuss the difference between buying an existing restaurant location and leasing directly from a landlord in order to perform a build-out and obtain operational permits. Additional topics include location, size related to concept, rent and how much you can afford, tenant improvements and what you should ask for and the do's and don't of successfully negotiating a lease.
