St. Clare Updates for
January 9-22, 2021

This coming Sunday with the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord we end our liturgical Christmas Season that signifies God's love for us. In return we share Divine love with others in many ways. The most evident way has been our gift giving. Speaking of that, Fr. Yarek and I want to thank you for all the beautiful Christmas cards, wishes, kind words and gifts we received. It means a lot to us to be part of your family and your life. Thank you for your kindness and generosity!
We also shared that love giving with others. I want to thank you for all the gifts we received for our Advent Tree program to help the needy in our area. We raised over $15,000! Another good sharing example is your continuous support of the El Salvador Orphanage project. Thanks to all of you!
As for the BC Government Order and continuation of the lockdown, we are all disappointed that we cannot welcome you back to your church! We want to continue to make you feel connected with us as much as possible. We will continue to do livestreaming Masses and give Communion as in the past.
Also, we will do confessions: Saturdays at 9:30 am-10:15am (no need to register) and for those who need another time by appointment (email request).
Let’s help one another with cheerful phone calls or other ways to make things brighter, better and hopeful! This difficult time will eventually come to an end!
Fr. Maciej

On January 7th Bonnie Henry announced that the suspension of all church services is extended until at least February 5th with the exception of weddings, funerals and baptisms which are now limited to 10 persons in attendance.
That means that for now all of our masses are closed to the public. However, we have made arrangements to live stream our masses as follows:
Daily Masses Monday through Friday at 9:00am
(these are posted on Youtube and can be watched
throughout that day)
Weekend Mass at 5:00pm on Saturday
(this is posted to Youtube and can be watched Saturday evening or Sunday)
You can participate in all of our online masses by clicking on the link on our website, www.stclare.ca or by searching for us on Youtube.

HOLY COMMUNION OUTSIDE OF MASS
We are giving Holy Communion on Sundays from 11am-12noon until the churches are reopened. To attend, you must pre-register on our web page St Clare Communion Registration
You need to register only one person from your family (from your “bubble”). For example, if there is a family of four coming to receive Communion please register online only one person (NOT four). Registration opens 7 days before the event.
This is not a regular service so we do not need to get the names of all attending. This way more people can receive the Bread of Life.
Upon receiving Communion please leave the parking lot immediately. As per the BC ORDER, we cannot have more than 50 cars for a so called “drive through”).
|
|
Our Confession Schedule is as follows:
- On Saturday mornings from 9:30am to 10:15am. No registration or appointment is necessary
-
By appointment by emailing our Pastor Fr. Maciej at mwos@rcav.org
Confessions are now heard in the Crying Room (by the washrooms on the east side of the church) NOT in the confessional.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton KCSG
|
|
You may put it down to my English heritage, but I have a certain lifelong fondness for GKC, although not, perhaps surprisingly, for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, rather for his popularising of Christian apologetics introduced to me by my various Franciscan high school teachers.
The third article attached starts from a Chesterton quotation, but then quickly becomes Ignatian in its development. All three are fascinating long reads!

Do you know Fr Jacques Philippe?
|
Within the space of a month, two spiritual advisors spoke of Fr Jacques Philippe, French priest of the new Community of the Beatitudes.
One gave me a book on St Thérèse of Lisieux, a favourite modern saint, entitled "The Way of Trust and Love", which she aptly called a "little gem". The other pointed to the man and his retreat work available on video, usually in French with very able interpreters paraphrasing in English. He described Fr Jacques Philippe as "one of my favourite speakers and authors.".

The Vatican Observatory Observed
|
|
|
Vatican astronomer, Guy Consolmagno SJ, presents various theories about the Star of Bethlehem, and asks "should we be preoccupied with calculations and planetary conjunctions?" Or are there other more important issues here?
|
|
|
He concludes: "Because the real message is outside the realm of astronomical calculations, the events that draw each one of us to encounter our Saviour are rooted in our own lives, our own histories, our own belief systems. Every such set of events is inherently improbable. And thus, we each have our own unique story to tell of how we wound up worshipping at the manger."

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
This year's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is from January 18 to 25. The 2021 theme – Abide in my love and you shall bear much fruit (John 15:5-9) – calls us to pray and to work for reconciliation and unity in the church, with our human family, and with all of creation. Drawing on the Gospel image of vine and branches, it invites us to nourish unity with God and with one another through contemplative silence, prayer, and common action. Grafted into Christ the vine as many diverse branches, may we bear rich fruit and create new ways of living, with respect for and communion with all of creation. Sign-up for daily prayers at rcav.org/unity
Online Safety for Children Webinar
Join us on Tuesday, Jan 26 at 7:00 pm for all parents, grandparents, and teachers regarding how to keep their children safe while online (specific for children in Grades 6 to 12). With COVID-19, our children are at home more, not meeting up with friends and therefore on their devices more and exposed to dangers online. Studies show that the more children are online, the more likely they may become a victim of cyberbullying and sexual offending. This webinar is organized by CoSA (Circle of Support and Accountability), a not-for-profit organization supporting the prevention of sexual crimes. Email Fraud Warning
The Archdiocese has received multiple reports from parishioners and priests who have fallen victim to a recent Internet email phishing scam. Imposters, posing as priests and using email addresses that are similar to those of our priests, have been emailing people asking for personal donations, gift cards, and other forms of financial assistance.
Never respond to emails requesting Google Play cards, iTunes cards, or any other form of personal financial assistance, even if it appears to be from a priest, deacon, religious, parish staff or bishop. If you have any doubt, please contact the sender by other means to verify any requests.
