2018 was a landmark year for UCI Law. We launched our 10-year anniversary celebration, moved up in the ranks in U.S. News to No. 21, and had tremendous success in our pro bono and clinical projects.

This year is already off to a fantastic start. Last week, Dean Song Richardson was elected to the AALS executive committee and Prof. Ken Simons received the 2019 William L. Prosser Award.

Now, we look forward to continuing our 10th-anniversary festivities with a specially curated exhibit at UCI’s Langson Library featuring video interviews from UCI Law founders, friends, staff, students and alumni; historical treasures from our first decade; and never-before-seen writings from founding dean Erwin Chemerinsky.

As we reflect on the past year and plan for the next, the UCI Law community plans to make 2019 our best yet.

Celebrating our New Dean: In January 2018, L. Song Richardson became the second dean of UCI Law. To celebrate the news, the UCI Law Student Bar Association threw a surprise party for Dean Richardson in the courtyard.
We’re 21!: In March 2018, U.S. News & World Report ranked UCI Law No. 21 in its list of best law schools in the nation, up seven spots from the previous year. UCI Law also placed in the top 13 in the U.S. News diversity index, ranked No. 13 for Clinical Training, and No. 21 for Intellectual Property Law. The Hamlet Trial: In April 2018, Dean Richardson went head-to-head with Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky in the UCI mock trial of Shakespeare’s Hamlet – an extraordinary interdisciplinary production between UCI Law, Claire Trevor School of the Arts and the UCI School of Humanities. The Class of 2018: UCI Law's Class of 2018, the law school's seventh J.D. class and inaugural LL.M. class, graduated on May 12, 2018. The ceremony included remarks from Dean L. Song Richardson; Kalpana Kotagal, partner at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC; Star Leal, J.D. Class of 2018; and Melinda Kazandjian, LL.M. Class of 2018.
Supreme Court Term in Review: UCI Law's 8th Annual Supreme Court Term in Review was held on July 9, 2018 at the Irvine Barclay Theater. The annual event was moderated by Prof. Rick Hasen and included panelists Erwin Chemerinsky, Leah Litman, Justice Goodwin Liu, Erin Murphy, Alexandra Natapoff and a special video appearance by NPR's Nina Totenberg. UCI Law’s 10th Class: UCI Law welcomed the Class of 2021, its 10th class, at orientation week in August 2018. The Class of 2021 is UCI Law’s largest, and is comprised from its largest application pool in the school’s history.
Celebrating 10 Years: On August 20, 2018, UCI Law kick started its 10th year of classes with a ribbon cutting ceremony in the school's courtyard. More than 200 students, faculty, staff and community members were in attendance to welcome the Class of 2021. The first three members of the Class of 2021 to accept admission, Marlon Holley, Erik Jimenez-Rodriguez and James Y. Kim, cut the ribbon. Read more about the celebration in the Daily Pilot.
Day of Service: More than 150 UCI Law students, alumni, faculty, staff and community friends came together Saturday, August 25, 2018 for the law school's Anniversary Day of Service. In the first school-wide day of service and largest community service project to date, UCI Law partnered with OC Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank preparing food deliveries for local individuals in need.
Serving our Veterans: U.S. Army veteran Spc. Fabian Rebolledo returned home to California Sept. 19, 2018, having won a three-year legal fight following his deportation to Mexico in 2010. The University of California, Irvine School of Law's Immigrant Rights Clinic (IRC) represented Rebolledo in his immigration case. Read more in the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times .
Observing Election Night: Over the past year, the UCI Law Intellectual Property, Arts & Technology Clinic has started working with nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving election systems and fixing problems with electronic voting. As part of that effort, students Kled Baci, Harrison Grant and Brian Trinh joined Prof. Jack Lerner to observe ballot counting at the Orange County Registrar of Voters on Election Night.
