Youth Services staff member, Justin Wang, shares his thoughts on three new manga series.
three teen boys
Midori is a super upbeat and kind-hearted girl who supports her family with a part-time job (against her school rules). She ends up getting caught by the school chairman and is blackmailed into babysitting three of her unruly classmates in order to maintain her scholarship. However, it turns out they aren’t as unruly as everyone made them out to be, and she may have fallen in love with one of them! I wasn’t sure what I would think about this shojo, but Midori is such an earnest character that I can’t help but smile and want to spend more time with her. After finishing the vol 1, I immediately read the next three - a ringing endorsement for this slice-of-life romantic comedy! Gr 7+
boy and girl in space
It’s Fairy Tail, but in space! Shiki is one of the few humans who can use the legendary Ether gear and along with his new friends and B-Cubers (Tik-Tok/Instagram), Rebecca and Happy, he is off to travel and discover the cosmos while looking for the fabled goddess, Mother. It’s been awhile since I’ve read something sci-fi that was as lighthearted and fun as this. The action is solid and I’m really fond of the story of Rebecca and Happy’s friendship. If you loved Fairy Tail and want a new adventure with a similar vibe, Edens Zero should be your next manga series. Gr 7+

Nina was the most popular idol in the group Pure Club until she was assaulted at an event. As a result of this trauma, she quit being an idol and pushed everyone away from her. I thought this was going to be a simple shojo where someone falls in love with an idol, but this manga is tackling more complicated topics like female objectification, idol/celebrity culture, and the trauma of assault and its lingering effects. While the manga content is definitely for older teen audiences, there isn’t anything overly graphic.
