Happy New Year from MPACT!

It's a new year!  Are you wondering what you can do to ensure a positive 2018 for your child?  Check out these ideas and begin your new resolutions today!
  • Relationships are important! Build relationships with your child's teachers and IEP team members.  This cannot be accomplished unless there is communication.   For tips on communicating, please review our fact sheet here: Assertiveness Communication Fact Sheet

  • Know what your rights are as a parent!   As parents, you are an equal member of your child's IEP team and the information you provide at IEP meetings is crucial to the development of the IEP.  As a parent, you have a right to be part of every IEP meetings.  To learn more about parent participation rights, please review our fact sheet here:  Parent Participation Fact Sheet
  • Learn to Negotiate!   Because we all come from different perspectives, we all have different ideas and opinions.   When you disagree with members of your child's IEP team, remember that negotiating can save time, money, and frustration.  For tips on negotiating, please review our fact sheet here:  Learning to Negotiate
  • Know what to expect!   There are specific timelines that schools follow for the special education process.  Whether your child is having an initial evaluation or is being reevaluated, know what you should expect.   You can review information about these timelines here:  Special Education Timelines
  • Knowledge is power!  The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education provides a guide for parents who have children that receive special education in Missouri. This guide explains the special education process from beginning to end.   Download the guide here to learn more about the process:  Parents Guide to Special Education in Missouri

Become an empowered parent in 2018!  Educate yourself.   Learning never ends!
