Snow on the ground (and the mud it leaves behind when it melts) is the perfect place to search for tracks of animals out in the winter weather! Get outside at WPNR or in your own yard to use our Tracks Discovery Guide to identify who else is out enjoying the snowy season!
Wild Ones is Getting Wilder!
Wild Ones: Nature Exploration Stations for Little Learners began in 2021 as a way to get Saint Vincent College undergraduate education students in front of preschool children in an educational setting during the uncertainty of the pandemic. |
Over the past 4 years, Wild Ones has become one of our most popular programs! Undergraduate early childhood students plan and provide hands-on activities for children 3-5 years old with their grown-ups! They hear a story, get outside, do a craft, and more during this free program.
In partnership with the SVC Education Department, we are so excited to announce the expansion of our Wild Ones program over the next year! This expansion will allow us to have additional kids participating in the program and give our education students a more in-depth teaching experience in a unique educational setting outside the confines of a formal classroom. We will start to implement some changes this spring and continue to refine and enhance the program during the Fall and Spring 2026!

Plan Your Garden this Winter
We have a Living Library at Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve! Sharing Seeds. It's the simplest of acts. It spreads kindness, hope, wellness, and joy. Placing a seed in the hand of another means you empower them in countless ways. From a seed you can grow food, a flower, or a shift in perspective. Seeds feed us, lift our moods, and, quite literally, save our health, and the health of the planet we inhabit.
In the coming months, we hope to inspire you to experience all that seeds have to offer, and in turn, we hope you'll share your seeds and experiences with others.
| The Seed Savers Exchange is a community of gardeners and seed stewards, sharing and swapping rare seeds. It works to keep biodiversity strong and garden traditions thriving. WPNR participates in this project as a way to put the power of sustenance in the hands of the people. In keeping with our priority of teaching members of our community how they can grow their own food and medicine, we maintain an ever-growing seed bank. | |
The WPNR Living Library contains approximately 400 seed varieties, but the number fluctuates throughout the season as they are used and/or donations are received. Some seeds have been grown in WPNR gardens, while others are leftover packages donated by staff and visitors. WPNR is listed on the Seed Savers Exchange and can be found at seedsavers.org. Not all of our varieties are listed on the SSE, but we are constantly adjusting our listings based on availability.
SHARING IS CARING...We only accept seeds of known variety (ie: “I don’t know what these are”). Seeds must be cleaned from chaff - no dried flower heads, etc., and we only accept one bag or less of seeds (ziplock, paper, etc.). Please fill out the seed donation/request form. If you do not know the botanical name, that’s okay. Record any important information they share with you in the notes.

Our Play Area Has Been Played Out!
You will notice that the mud kitchen is missing and some play areas are closed...
Not to worry, the mud kitchen is here to stay...just in a different area, and lots of exciting surprises are in store for our outdoor discovery areas in 2025!

Beia in Bookland Brings YouTube Book Review to WPNR!
Last month, we introduced you to Beia and her book reviews! This month, she joined us in the Learning Center Barn to review children's books by a local author!
Take a look at the latest "Beia in Bookland" episode for a peak at a familiar place and some familiar people! Beia filmed her YouTube book review at WPNR in December and chatted to Angela and Allison about WPNR's programming. While visiting for our Cozy Christmas Open House, Beia also reviewed Animals Lost and Found: Stories of Extinction, Conservation, and Survival by Jason Bittel, a Pennsylvania science author passionate about getting people to connect with the wonder around them.
Check our Beia's new review at the link to the right and check out Animals Lost and Found and other books from Jason Bittel in WPNR's Lending Library!

Get in the Loop, Get Out, and Have Some Fun!
|
We often get asked, "How do I find out about your events?", and our answer is always overwhelmingly "social media!"
While we can certainly appreciate the love of a slower pace and the need to unplug, social media does have its merits, like giving us the ability to offer our community the most up-to-date information in real time.
Of course, you can always stop in the barn during business hours or visit our outdoor wayside exhibit after hours for a paper flyer. There's also our super informative website with lots of fun things to explore too. And last but not least, you can subscribe to our email list to receive occasional updates, and our monthly eNews...but if you're reading this, you already knew that!
Check out some of our Facebook and Instagram posts here, highlighting some of the great events we hosted in 2024. If you don't want to miss out on upcoming events, educational tidbits, photos, and sometimes just silly nature humor, click the icons below to follow and subscribe. We appreciate your support and can't wait to see you in 2025!
