Happy Tails: Minnie's Story
This happy tail is just one example of what the Sacramento Shelter Pets Alive (SSPA) team works for every day!

Minnie came to SSPA as part of an animal cruelty case, and SSPA was a crucial safety net for this girl.

Our incredible behavioral team member Sandy took Minnie in as a foster for a year to help her develop trust and overcome the horror she'd been through.

Sandy's commitment to this girl ensured she found a wonderful forever family that would give Minnie the love she so deserves!
In a recent update, her adopter Andrew said, "About two years ago we adopted Minnie. She had spent the year recovering from the abuse of her previous owner. Today, she is the happiest, bounciest pup who is full of nothing but love."

Minnie is another example of dogs' incredible resilience and how they shouldn't be judged by their past!

When we say "Where all dogs matter," we mean it - and many of Sacramento County's large-breed shelter pups have found their happy tails because of SSPA's life-saving programs!
Happy Tails for Two Beloved Seniors
Two of our seniors, who captured many hearts, have found their happy beginnings!

Nothing brings our team more joy than seeing our dogs go to forever homes, but it's even more special when it's one (or more) of our seniors!

Marcy, top/left, was adopted yesterday by a wonderful family!

Thirteen-year-old Ellie, above/right, is now happy as a can be in a wonderful foster home! She's such a love that the family is looking into fostering to adopt!

We can't wait for updates!

Help SSPA Save More Lives!
Dog Day Out Success Story
What happens when innovative programs - such as Dog Day Out - get the community involved in helping shelter dogs? More happy tails!

Beloved Siegfried (aka Ziggy) was adopted last week by a woman who drove up to Sacramento from San Jose.

How did she learn about this sweet boy? She saw his Dog Day Out photos on Instagram and fell in love!

This shows the value in SSPA’s Dog Day Out program with the community. Every time you take a dog out and share those images and descriptions, you are helping that dog find a happy beginning with a forever family!

Together, we are brightening the lives of both shelter dogs and humans - because you can’t save dogs without helping people, too!

Together, we can make a huge difference for the community’s dogs who need us most!

We can't thank you enough for making this not only possible, but a success!

Q&A with Volunteer Chandra Bourne

How long have you been part of Sacramento Shelters Pets Alive and what inspired you to be part of the team?
I started in January 2015 as we wanted to do some volunteering as a family. I'd volunteered at Bradshaw years ago, before I had my daughter, and with her getting a little older, had time to do it again. My daughter Chloe started assisting the photographer, Shannon Skalisky, and my husband Ron and I walked dogs and took them for outings to the river (before Dog Day Out)! I also made videos for the dogs. I found SSPA (then PB SOC) because we adopted a pit bull mix puppy and Facebook friends led me to PB SOC.

What’s the best thing about being a member of the SSPA team?
I love that there are so many ways to help dogs with SSPA. I've done everything from social media to photography to videos to adoption events to dog walking and outings. I now lead an amazing group of people who photograph the dogs. Above all though, the best thing about SSPA is that Delyse and the team put the dogs first, always.
What moment during your time with SSPA is most memorable for you?
We brought home a weekend foster dog, Aussie, back in 2016. She was so incredibly sweet and lovely that we adopted her. She recently died from bone cancer, but we had three wonderful years with her and she touched everyone she met. I also adore replacing the sad profile pictures of the dogs with fresh, beautiful photos of them looking happy and loved. Seeing all the Dog Day Out photos is a huge thrill, too.

What do you hope to help SSPA accomplish in the future?
I want to see SSPA grow and thrive and help more dogs. I'd also love to see the community understand what SSPA does and appreciate all the incredible work that happens for our dogs.

And finally, what is your favorite thing about your pets?
We have just one dog now, Teddy, and he's smart as anything. He challenges me every day and I'm so enthralled with seeing him think. It's fun to help him learn, which he's still doing at seven.

Won't You Take Us Home?
Jenny

This girl is one adorable bundle of fun and awesome!

She has captured the hearts of the whole SSPA team and volunteers.

She might be a senior, but that doesn't slow her down one bit! She has energy, some sass and plenty of sweetness. She also does great on car rides.

Stanley

Our gentle giant is still looking for a home!

He's an amazing boy who walks well on leash - no pulling - and enjoys car rides.

He’s equally happy going on adventures as he is lounging about!

Volunteers have said:

  • "He was so awesome!!!! Super mellow, loved the sprinklers and walked great. Love him."
  • "He’s fabulous!!!! So chill – walked well on leash – loves the car!"

He’d prefer a home without other pups and with handlers who understand that he’s less comfy with his back end being touched.

Overall, he’s just hoping to de-stress and chill out as a family member!
