Hello Kidlit Creators...
November 2 is the NYC Marathon. As I write this, I am remembering my own experience running the marathon, (many years ago).
Mostly, it felt l-o-n-g. At times, endless.
But the sidewalks along the route were packed with supportive people. Kids reached out to give high fives. Volunteers offered water, Gatorade, first aid, and massages. If you had your name written on your shirt, the cheers were personal. "Go, April!!" "Lookin' good, April!" "You got this, April!" I sometimes found myself weeping from the tidal wave of support.
After the the marathon, I wondered why it couldn't be like that at other times and places. I daydreamed arriving at work to coworkers yelling, "Great job!" "Thanks for your hard work!" "You're amazing!"
The journey to publication can feel like a marathon, too. We face creative challenges, rejections, uncertainty, and long waits.
Our hope is that your SCBWI community is like the fans at the marathon, cheering you, offering hydration, giving tips on how to train and what route to take, and supporting you as you go. Marathons are long, so remember, you can walk when you need to. You don't have to come in ahead of anyone else. And we are there for you as long as you need us. And don't forget to write your name on your shirt.
