A Coffee Treat Kind of Thursday
Do you ever have one of those weeks where you get to the end of Tuesday and think to yourself, “Man it’s been a long week.” And then you realize it’s Tuesday.
That’s kind of how this week has been here at All Saints’. And I am not complaining at all—I love what I get to do and the people that I get to be with, but there are weeks when it seems like everything happens all at once. And of course, each thing is excellent and important and worthy of care and attention, but sometimes it’s just a lot.
It started on Sunday with Day School Sunday, a beautiful celebration of the whole All Saints’ community. Our choristers sang beautifully; Dr. Whitman (our Head of School) and Lillian Benjamin (Student Council Co-President) spoke with heart and humor; the faculty, staff, and trustees showed up in force; and many people stayed after service to enjoy a snack and some friendship.
Day School Sunday was just the first of many Day School events this week, though. On Tuesday and Thursday evening, our school administrators unveiled the School’s new strategic plan to parents. And on Thursday morning, we welcomed a batch or prospective parents to campus to tour the school and learn about All Saints’.
In between all these Day School events, Evensong happened on Wednesday evening. It was our first Evensong of the season—and the first Evensong for most of us since singing several services in England in May and June—and it was absolutely beautiful. I am so grateful for Tom and Gavan and our amazing and dedicated choir.
These special events are just part of the story of this week, though. As I write this, here is what is happening in our office. Toby, Cathy, and Will are all working outside in the Close to prepare for our winter lawn (which should be ready by All Saints’ Day). Christina is preparing to mail giving statements for the 4th quarter. Daniel is working on material for his ongoing class on the mystics. Erin, Nanette, and I are preparing for two funerals this weekend. Allison is getting things ready for the Bishop’s visitation in just one month. And this upcoming Sunday will require a lot of extra care and preparation from all of us as we gather in the Day School Pavilion to bless all our pets at 9AM!
So why I am writing to you about all of this? Because rather than choosing to focus on how much is going on and how busy we all feel right now, I am intentionally expressing to our staff how grateful I am for each and every one of them, for their dedication to this place and this community, and for the amount of care and energy they invest in their jobs each and every day. And in the middle of a busy week, it’s good to take a break and celebrate the fact that we are not here to do this work alone. So, we had a coffee treat this morning and the most remarkable thing happened. The mood around the whole place lightened. People came out of their offices and talked and laughed for a moment. We collectively remembered why we are all here—for the love and joy of community—as we enjoyed a moment of community ourselves.

The Deacon’s Bible Study
Led by Deacon Patrice
Women of the Bible
FALL 2026: SECOND & FOURTH TUESDAYS
10:30am in the St. Barbara Meeting Rooms on Oct 6 & 27 | Nov 17 & 24
(Notice Date Change in Red)
Reading about the women in the Bible reveals a great deal more than simply the stories of a few individuals. Through the women’s trials and triumphs, the text offers various (sometimes contradictory) pictures of gender, family life, and relationships. Our modern understanding of gender may not translate directly onto the functions of gender in the Bible.
What are our pre-conceptions about gender in the time of the Hebrew Bible and in the Greco-Roman world? We may imagine that ancient women were universally oppressed or powerless, relegated to their roles as wives and mothers. This unit challenges these pre-conceived ideas as it seeks to understand the many roles women hold in biblical stories. We will read the stories with special attention to the power dynamics, including those surrounding gender, enslavement, and empire.
It is important to remember that these women’s stories do not necessarily reveal what was normal or even ideal about gender in the ancient Near East or the Greco-Roman world. Instead, they show us glimpses of those worlds from which the authors of the texts made meaning.
“Women in the Bible” sheds new light on familiar characters like Mary Magdalene in the New Testament and Sarah, Abraham’s wife in the Hebrew Bible. It also studies characters who are less well known to many Bible readers, such as the city of Babylon, styled as a whore in the Book of Revelation. Through the stories of these women, discover how gender can inform your reading as you explore how these stories relate to your own faith journey.”

Thank you to the fantastic altar party and hospitality team who survived just fine without my help (I was busy taking photos). Thank you to our facilities staff for their efforts and hospitality. And thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the spiritual refreshment that only a Choral Evensong can provide!
