Going Absolutely Krackers for the Animals

Kitsap Humane Society's 30th Annual Animal Krackers Gala was an enormous success!

On October 5, nearly 300 KHS friends and supporters gathered at Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort to celebrate the victories of the past year and toast the ones to come. Through silent and live auctions, and an extraordinary "fund-a-need" raise the paddle event, more than $360,000 was raised for the animals in our care!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and thank you to our tremendous sponsors, including our Diamond Paw Presenting Sponsor, Brown Bear Car Wash. We can't wait to see you next year!

Got a Barn or Warehouse? You Need a Cat!

It's getting to be that time of year, when the rodent population looks for warmer quarters and often times it's a place you don't necessarily want them. That's when Barn Cats can really be your friends. The safest way to control the rodent population on your property or in a storage area is with these cats. No poisons for children and pets to get into, and no need to set traps. Plus, you'll be giving them a much-needed home!

As luck would have it, Kitsap Humane is currently flush with Barn Cats and you could take them home today! Our Barn Cat program is designed to find community cats safe outdoor homes where they can benefit their caretakers. We place Barn Cats with appropriate adopters on a first-come/first-served basis at our Adoption Center, Wednesday through Monday - and all cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before heading home with you.

What do you need to do?

  • Provide a secure enclosure to keep them confined for a period of time before letting them outside.
  • Provide a litter box, food and water, and hiding spaces. If possible bring a photo of your set-up when you come to adopt.
  • Bring two hard-sided carriers to transport the cats (yes, two - we don't want them to get lonely!)

Our adoption professionals will be able to coach you on appropriate care and find the perfect cats for your situation!

Thank You to Our Community Supporters!

We at Kitsap Humane Society are eternally grateful for all the ways we're supported by our animal-loving fans throughout the county and beyond. Attendance at events like Putting Fore Pets and PetsWalk (and the upcoming Comedy Unleashed - don't miss it!). Donations of food, treats, toys, bedding, and other resources. Grants from corporations and organizations big and small.

We're also enormously proud of the support and love shown by local businesses for our efforts, in the form of third-party fundraising, and want to give a shout out to a few of our recent partnerships:

  • Our local first responders held a benefit softball game - Central Kitsap Fire vs. Bremerton Police & Washington State Patrol - on Sept. 16 with donations going to KHS.

  • Thank you to Crumbl Cookies in Silverdale, whose takeover event on Sept. 28 brought in over $300 for our furry friends. And we had the chance to snack on some fabulous cookies as well!

  • Thank you to Holmberg Mechanical who held an October 7 golf tournament - the Holmie Invitational - to benefit KHS.

  • A big thanks to our friends at Book 'Em bookstore in Port Orchard who made us the featured nonprofit throughout October and will be holding an adoption event on Oct. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come and pet some puppies!

  • Thank you to Liberty Bay Books of Poulsbo who has also supported KHS throughout the month and will continue to do so by donating 20 percent of sales of "The Twelve Dogs of Christmas" by local author Susan Wiggs through the end of the year.

  • Grocery Outlet in Silverdale donated shopping carts to help us move blankets and other items around the shelter easier. Thanks guys!

And next up: a November 12 Bingo event hosted by Maynard's in Silverdale and a partnership with one of our favorite purveyors of paper - Bremerton Letterpress! Stay tuned!

Thank you everyone for your support!

September Adoptions

We fall in love every day. With cats, dogs, bunnies, roosters, snakes, lizards, birds - and every other animal who ventures through our doors. But as much as we miss them when they get adopted, nothing makes us happier than seeing our little buddies find new homes.

So we were delighted to say bye-bye to the good boys and girls that found new families in September. In all, 327 animals were adopted out, including 148 kittens, 81 adult cats, 58 adult dogs, 33 puppies, four rabbits, two reptiles, and one very happy chicken!

Thank you to everyone who helped these adoptions happen - especially those who've opened up their homes to the animals who need them. If you've recently adopted a new family member from KHS, we'd love to hear more! Submit your KHS alum's Happy Tail for a chance to have them featured across our social media platforms!

He'd love a home with a lot of room to roam and a cozy place to snooze. He's a incredibly sweet boy who will be your best buddy for years to come!

Come visit him and see if you're right for each other - Wednesday through Monday, noon to 4 p.m.

Staff Spotlight

Welcome Jeanine Worthington!

New Kitsap Humane Society Adoption Coordinator Jeanine Worthington is used to doing multiple things at once. Prior to coming to KHS, she spent five years at PAWS of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap, covering multiple positions, including Adoption Center Manager, Volunteer Manager, Facilities Manager, and Community Relations Manager - while also selling real estate on the side. She obviously loves a challenge. And she found one with KHS.

"We're able to help a lot of animals here," says Jeanine. "And that's what it's all about; watching the animals go home. I wish more people knew what goes into getting these animals ready to succeed in a new home."

Her most memorable success at KHS came with Douglas the cat, who lived in Jeanine's office for a good part of his stay. "Douglas came in matted, overweight, and declawed. He had to be shaved and have six teeth pulled." In fact, he was the first client of the new Russ and Linda Young Veterinary Lifesaving Center's dental suite, and with a lot of care from KHS staff, he found a loving home.

"The staff here is busy but amazing," says Jeanine. "Animal people get each other... we're a bunch of weirdos. It's great to work with such a supportive group."

At home she's equally busy, with two dogs (plus her dog, Anka, who just passed), four cats, and two rabbits. But again, she's used to doing many things at once - including loving a whole lot of animals at the same time.
