Honoring President’s Day & Key Updates for the Week Ahead

Dear SLC3 Members and Friends,

On this President’s Day, we take a moment to reflect on the leadership, vision, and resilience of those who have led our nation. Their words continue to inspire us in our daily lives and work. As we begin a new week, here are a few quotes from past presidents to motivate and guide us:

  • "The best way to predict the future is to create it." – Abraham Lincoln
  • "Believe you can and you’re halfway there." – Theodore Roosevelt
  • "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." – Theodore Roosevelt

Unlocking AI’s Potential: Insights from 'AI Unlocked: How to Make AI an Executive Priority'

Artificial intelligence isn’t the future—it’s the now. At our recent event, AI Unlocked: How to Make AI an Executive Priority, Ashley Pyle, Chief Experience Officer at GadellNet, delivered powerful insights on how AI is transforming industries and everyday workflows. From HR professionals to construction project managers, one message was clear: AI isn’t here to replace you—it’s here to empower you.

The Art of the Prompt: Unlocking AI’s Full Power

A key takeaway from Ashley’s session? Quality input leads to quality output. Writing effective prompts is the foundation of successful AI interactions. Whether you're using Microsoft Copilot for project management, Perplexity for research, or Napkin.AI for brainstorming, the clearer your instructions, the better the results. Prompt-writing is quickly becoming a must-have skill in the digital age—one that drives efficiency and innovation across industries.

AI for Every Role—At Work and Beyond

Ashley highlighted how AI is more than a tool—it’s a game-changer across professions. HR teams can leverage it for resume screening and employee engagement strategies, while construction project managers can use it for scheduling, resource allocation, and safety management. But AI’s benefits don’t stop at the office—tools like Copilot and Perplexity can help you plan trips, manage personal projects, and even simplify your day-to-day tasks. The key isn’t just using AI, but knowing when and how to use it effectively.

AI Won’t Replace You—But Someone Using It Might

Ashley dispelled the common fear that AI will take jobs. Instead, she emphasized that those who learn to use AI will outpace those who don’t. The real risk is not automation—it’s falling behind. Embracing tools like Napkin.AI, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot can help you streamline processes, reduce costs, and boost productivity. The message was clear: AI is here to assist, not replace, and those who adapt will lead the way.

The Future Is Now—Are You Ready?

The event left us inspired and ready to act. AI is no longer optional; it’s essential. But success with AI starts with knowledge—of tools, techniques, and most importantly, mindset. As Ashley reminded us: AI won’t replace your job. But someone who knows how to use it effectively will.

When Dirt Meets Data: How Construction Monitoring Tech is Transforming an Industry

SLC3 Members IMEG and Holland Construction Services were recently featured in Construction News and Revew. Check out the full article to hear how they're transforming the industry with technology and smarter construction practices!

Those qualities that are uniquely human – things like craftsmanship, intuition, problem-solving – can never be replaced by a computer program on a jobsite, of course. Yet, many of the recent technological innovations are rapidly transforming the industry. And the latest advances in construction monitoring offer incredible tools for project oversight and management.

In fact, even before the first chunk of mud ends up on a work boot, millions of data points can now be harvested and organized, providing a more complete picture of the project and leading crews to work more efficiently.

While these innovations have often focused on a singular task or step in the construction process, they’re increasingly being integrated into other technologies – each step informing the next, leading to massive time and cost savings at nearly every turn. And the latest tools are already demonstrating record-breaking accuracy and efficiency that allow builders to work more cost-effectively and sustainably – and, of course, profitably.

Word seems to be spreading, too. The Business Research Company reports the construction monitoring market has grown by 16 percent in the past year – from $1.82 billion in 2023 to $2.11 billion in 2024, and it estimates more of the same in the years ahead, reaching $3.85 billion by 2028.

While it’s tough to approximate how many U.S. contractors are on board, most recognize these innovations can no longer be ignored. From the latest IoT devices and drones to building information modeling (BIM) software and augmented reality, these advances are streamlining design, enhancing site monitoring, minimizing delays, improving safety and basically revolutionizing every step of a project.

Mike Lawless, Vice President of Innovation, IMEG

Mike Lawless serves as vice president of innovation for Illinois-headquartered engineering design firm IMEG, and says his firm already leverages several different types of technology to review jobsites and existing facilities.

“We use everything from simple tools like 360 cameras all the way to survey quality scans using drones. We work to pair the technology to the need,” Lawless said. “Construction monitoring technology can keep the entire team better informed of the progress and provide faster, more accurate information should any issues arise.”

His firm has been using advanced scanning techniques for years, including reality capture technology. The process used a combination of 3D laser scanners and 360-degree cameras to quickly capture existing field conditions. The resulting “point cloud” can be pulled into design software to uncover inconsistencies between the real site and what’s been in the design.

“In the old days it could be really hard to get a group to all understand an issue because not everyone could see it,” Lawless said. “Now with the 3D capture technology, everyone can get the necessary views, which can help resolve issues more quickly.”

Dan Peter, VDC Field Manager, Holland Construction Services

Dan Peter is the VDC (virtual design and construction) field manager for St. Louis-based Holland Construction Services, and he says he’s also been leaning on reality capture.

“This really opens up the capabilities of QA and QC and making sure installation is going correctly – or if you’re identifying any type of deviation between design intent and construction,” Peter said. “So far, it’s had a huge impact. We’ve been able to provide insight into things we never have before. We can also check equipment installation and make sure our trade partners are following the design intent we have. It has really opened our eyes to quality and a whole other dimension.”

At IMEG, Lawless says he’s also seen how well the technology keeps everyone on the same page throughout the process.

“We’ve found that reality capture can save time,” he said. “It’s difficult to get a group of people to look at a construction issue on site, but with reality capture we can all view it virtually together, improving understanding and communication.”

Savings, Safety And So Much More

While some of the newer technologies, such as mixed reality – which blends the physical and digital worlds, allowing users to simultaneously interact with both – are only beginning to be adopted, some of the more established innovations are now really hitting their stride.

“One of the technologies we use almost every single day is drone technology,” said Peter. “It really has had such a huge impact on our project sites, not only for analytical reviews but also giving us LiDAR (light detection and ranging) capabilities to where we can start leveraging topography.”

In addition to gathering slopes and elevations, Peter says the drones also allow his teams to quickly review past projects or sniff out potential risks on future sites...

Habit #8: Be Kind to Yourself

It's easy to punish and define ourselves by failures, mistakes, circumstances, and/or the opinions of others.

Self-punishment drains precious energy, hope, and time - keeping us stuck.

We are worthy of kindness.

Remember:

We ARE people. We are NOT mistakes, objects, or obstacles.

Performance Tips:

  • Do something kind for yourself every day.

  • After you make a mistake, respond with kindness. Encourage yourself the same way you would encourage a child learning to walk.

Honoring Presidents' Day: A Tribute to Leadership and Legacy

Presidents' Day stands as a tribute to the leaders who have shaped the United States into the great nation it is today. It is a day to honor the achievements, sacrifices, and vision of the individuals who have served as President of the United States, guiding the country through times of prosperity and hardship alike. As we celebrate this important holiday, it is essential to reflect on its origins, its significance, and the enduring legacy of presidential leadership.

The Origins of Presidents' Day

Originally established in recognition of George Washington’s birthday, Presidents' Day traces its roots back to the early 19th century. Washington, as the nation's first president and one of its founding fathers, set a precedent for leadership, unity, and democratic governance. His birthday, February 22, was first recognized as a federal holiday in 1879.

Over time, the holiday evolved, and in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was enacted to provide workers with more three-day weekends and encourage national observance. This act moved the celebration to the third Monday in February, and over the years, the day became known as Presidents' Day, expanding its recognition to include not just Washington but all U.S. presidents.

What Presidents' Day Stands for Today

In modern times, Presidents' Day serves as a reminder of the values and leadership that have shaped the country. It is a moment to honor not only Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthdays both fall in February, but also the many presidents who have led with courage, integrity, and innovation.

The holiday is a time to reflect on the contributions of presidents such as:

  • Thomas Jefferson, who penned the Declaration of Independence and championed democratic principles.
  • Abraham Lincoln, who led the nation through the Civil War and abolished slavery.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt, who guided the country through the Great Depression and World War II.
  • John F. Kennedy, who inspired a nation with his vision for space exploration and civil rights.
  • Ronald Reagan, who played a key role in ending the Cold War and revitalizing the economy.

Each president has left an indelible mark on the country, contributing to its growth, prosperity, and stability. While policies and political beliefs have varied, their leadership has helped shape the United States into a beacon of democracy and progress.

Honoring the Legacy

Presidents' Day is an opportunity to engage in civic reflection, study history, and appreciate the evolution of leadership in the U.S. It is a time for schools, institutions, and communities to discuss the importance of governance, the Constitution, and the principles that uphold the nation’s democracy.

From visiting presidential landmarks to learning about historical achievements, Americans celebrate this holiday in various ways. Businesses offer promotions, schools hold educational events, and citizens take the time to express gratitude for the leaders who have served the nation.

Conclusion

Presidents' Day is more than just a day off—it is a day of remembrance, reflection, and appreciation for those who have shaped the United States. As we honor the leaders of the past and present, we are reminded of the power of leadership, the responsibility of governance, and the continuous journey toward a better future.

By celebrating Presidents' Day, we acknowledge the contributions of all U.S. presidents, reaffirming our commitment to the ideals of democracy, liberty, and progress that define this great nation.

Honoring Horace King, Master Bridge Builder

During Black History Month, we celebrate the pioneers who shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations. We honor the profound contributions of African Americans to the construction industry. Among these pioneers is Horace King (1807–1885), a distinguished architect, engineer, and bridge builder whose innovative designs left an enduring impact on the American South.

Born into slavery in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, King displayed exceptional engineering and construction talent. His experience overcoming the limitations of slavery shaped his resourceful and innovative approach to architecture. Under his owner and mentor, John Godwin, King played a pivotal role in building numerous bridges across Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. His mastery earned him the commission to design the Alabama State Capitol's framework after a fire in 1849, where he crafted the iconic twin spiral staircases with cantilevered beams, creating a striking 'floating' effect.

In 1846, King purchased his freedom, funding it through earnings from his bridge construction projects, continuing his legacy of architectural excellence. Beyond his engineering achievements, King became a civic leader, serving in the Alabama state legislature during Reconstruction. His leadership and advocacy for African American rights demonstrated his dedication to uplifting his community.

King's bridges and structures, such as the iconic West Point Bridge over the Chattahoochee River, exemplify his engineering brilliance. The West Point Bridge, known for its innovative lattice truss design, stood as a vital transportation link for decades. His life is a testament to resilience, skill, and creativity, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations of builders and innovators. Honoring Horace King is a celebration of both his technical mastery and his trailblazing contributions to society.

Bystander Intervention in the Workplace: Protecting Against Harassment

One Minute Takeaway:

  • Bystander intervention is when a person witnesses harassment or discrimination and steps in to help.
  • There are several types of bystander intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct.
  • Bystander intervention training empowers your team to support each other through difficult situations.

Workplace harassment is a serious issue. To start, it severely damages company culture and your employees’ mental health. In turn, productivity goes down. Over time, a company that ignores or endorses harassment will gain a bad reputation among job candidates and potential customers. Retention drops, recruiting costs go up, and your budget steadily shrinks.

This vicious cycle won’t go away on its own. Fortunately, HR is in a perfect position to help. When you’re ready to end workplace harassment, it’s time to train your team in bystander intervention.

What Is Bystander Intervention?

The short answer is – it’s just what it sounds like. Bystander intervention is when a person witnesses bad behavior and steps in to help. And anyone can do it! Bystanders don’t have to be bosses or HR leaders. In some cases, having a peer step in is even more effective.

Bystander intervention doesn’t always happen right away. Sometimes, it’s better to wait a few minutes or hours, and then approach the person you saw being harassed. Speaking to them one-on-one can be less intimidating, and therefore more supportive. However, it can be hard for employees to know which tactic would be best. Proper training and HR support empower people to navigate these difficult situations.

Recognizing Harassment and Microaggressions

Before you can interrupt harassment, discrimination, or bullying, you need to know what it is. While there are countless types of harassment, these are some of the most common.

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is an umbrella term. It normally refers to inappropriate behavior, comments, or gestures, but it’s sometimes used to describe unwanted physical touch. Sexual harassment might seem innocuous at first, but context matters. For example, politely asking a person out on a date isn’t necessarily harassment. But asking your direct report on a date, or asking a peer repeatedly even after they say no would be inappropriate. When left unchecked, sexual harassment often leads to sexual assault or abuse.

Sexual Assault or Abuse

Sexual assault – sometimes referred to as SA – is unwanted physical touch. The term could mean any kind of touch, from groping to rape. SA survivors use this term in a wide variety of ways, but it most commonly refers to rape. Sexual abuse typically refers to ongoing or repeated sexual assault, especially between people with a clear power differential.

Gender-Based Harassment

Sexism and transphobia are gender-based harassment, but not necessarily sexual. For example, asking a woman if she’s on her period could qualify as gender-based harassment.

Racial Discrimination

Race-based discrimination isn’t limited to intentional racism. For example, some employers see textured, natural hair as unprofessional. Supporters of the CROWN Act, however, say that policies prohibiting natural hair are a form of race-based discrimination. One study found that Black women’s hair is 2.5 times more likely to be seen as unprofessional at work (CROWN Workplace Research Study).

Verbal Harassment

Whether it’s bullying, discrimination, or outright emotional abuse, verbal harassment has no place at work. It can include yelling, name-calling, personal attacks, and other inappropriate comments.

Microaggressions

Of all the different types of harassment, microaggressions are the hardest to spot. These small comments or actions convey bias against historically marginalized groups. Microaggressions can relate to any form of discrimination – sexism, racism, homophobia, ableism, and so on. But unlike sexual assault or verbal abuse, microaggressions are often unintentional. For example, telling a woman she “should smile more” implies that her worth is tied to her looks or her emotional state.

Why Bystander Intervention Matters

Bystander intervention decreases violence and harassment (MIT). Training your team in these techniques serves several purposes...

Accelerate Action

MARCH 8 - FREE International Women's Day 2025 theme resources - #IWD2025

IWD 2025 campaign theme is 'Accelerate Action'

Collectively, we can Accelerate Action for gender equality.

Step forward in solidarity for International Women's Day (IWD) 2025 on March 8 to help #AccelerateAction.

At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity, according to data from the World Economic Forum.

Focusing on the need to Accelerate Action emphasizes the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.

So, together, let's Accelerate Action to speed up the rate of progress worldwide.

One of the best ways to forge gender equality is to understand what works and to do more of this, faster.

Accelerate Action is a worldwide call to acknowledge strategies, resources, and activity that positively impact women's advancement, and to support and elevate their implementation.

Significant barriers to gender equality remain, yet with the right action and support, positive progress can be made for women everywhere.
