March 2021
SOCIAL WORKERS LEADING FOR JUSTICE
Hello,

It is March and you know what that means... it's Social Work Month! The theme for this year's Social Work Month is that social workers are essential. We've known that to be true for as long as this profession has existed. In fact, last year, at the onset of the pandemic, we published an op-ed pointing out just how essential social workers are.

This year, we're unveiling a full line-up of mostly free events designed to help you connect, have fun, and refuel. We hope you'll join us for one or all of these events:

We hope you'll also join us on April 15 and 16 for Symposium 2021, the largest (virtual!) gathering of social workers in New England. Licensed social workers and LMHCs can choose from over 80 different workshops to earn up to 15.5 CEUs over the course of 2 days. Learn more, view workshops, and register here.

We exist for you and because of you, and we know we are stronger together. Thank you for the essential, life-saving work you do every day, often without thanks or acknowledgement. We see you and we appreciate you.

With gratitude,
Rebekah Gewirtz
Executive Director

HELP NASW-MA Nominate Social Workers to Important Police Reform Commission
With passage of the Racial Justice and Police Accountability bill also known as An Act relative to Justice, Equity and Accountability in Law Enforcement in the Commonwealth, NASW-MA has an important opportunity to nominate 5 social workers for a seat on the newly created Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST)—an independent state entity, the majority of which is composed of civilians—to standardize the certification, training, and decertification of police officers. The commission will have independent power to investigate misconduct.

One of the 5 NASW-MA social worker nominees will be selected by the Governor to serve a 5-year term. We have convened a group of criminal justice/social work experts both internal and external to NASW-MA to think through qualifications of nominees for this important role. Do you know someone who should be considered? Should you yourself be considered? Click the green button below to self-nominate or to urge a colleague to self-nominate by March 5, 2021.

For more information on this important legislation or the POST commission specifically, please be in touch with Rebekah Gewirtz at rgewirtz.naswma@socialworkers.org.

Sustaining and Nurturing the Helper
Earn 1.5 CEUs!
This workshop acknowledges the toll that providing care for others can take on us as social workers. By reframing our work to include humane and compassionate limitations, dispelling the myth of the infinitely-resourced caregiver and centering the care of ourselves within our vision of compassionate care of others, we will be better able to build and maintain sustainable practices and live and work more fully.

Virtual Symposium on Ending the Incarceration of Women and Girls
Earn 1.5 CEUs!
Join Families for Justice as Healing and New Beginnings Re-Entry Services for a panel and policy discussion with formerly incarcerated women and women with incarcerations focused on stopping any prison for women from being built in MA and creating community-led alternatives to the current system so we can decarcerate.

While MA has one of the lowest rates of incarcerating women in the country, we spend more on incarceration per person than almost any other state. As there are current plans to build a new women's prison, we will discuss existing and emerging solutions and talk about current legislation you can support to fight these proposals.

New Beginnings Re-Entry Services will share groundbreaking programming and services that address the root causes of incarceration. We have concrete, common sense steps toward decarceration to share that promote the wellbeing of women, our families, and our communities. We look forward to connecting and working together!

CLINICAL AND PRIVATE PRACTICE
Regarding Virtual Card Payments and Optum Pay Services
Recently, Optum announced expanded options for all providers to receive claims payments, which included options to enroll in Automated Clearing House (“ACH” or direct deposit) for claims payments or through a Virtual Card Payment (“VCP”) rather than a paper check. These services are available to providers through Optum Pay.
Optum Pay also recently announced an enhanced version of their offering in 2021 which includes a new, paid subscription option.

  • Optum will continue to issue paper checks through December 31, 2021, for Massachusetts behavioral health providers who choose not to enroll in ACH for direct deposit or VCP for claims payments. Prior to Jan 1, 2022, Optum will communicate steps to continue paper checks
  • If you are currently enrolled for ACH or VCP, no further action is required and no changes to your receipt of payment method will occur
  • If you receive payment via paper check, there is no further action needed by you unless you prefer to receive payment via a VCP or direct deposit
  • Optum Pay is also extending its trial period for the enhanced Optum Pay product at no cost through 12/31/21, for Massachusetts behavioral health providers to include:
  • Payment history search functionality (36 months)
  • The ability to print a PDF of a payment (RA-remittance advice or EOP-explanation of payment)
  • There is no limit to the number of users
  • Prior to Jan 1, 2022, Optum will communicate details re: how to continue to have necessary provider payment features including search functionality

Please note: providers must opt in to the enhanced option by February 28, 2021, in order to retain the premium functionality. Providers will receive additional information regarding this process by February 1, 2021.

If you have questions, you can contact Optum's Provider Service Line at 1-877-614-0484 or Optum Pay at 1-877-620-6194.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD
National Convening: Leading Schools with Mental Health and Equity in Mind
What can the learnings of the past year teach us about caring for our students and ourselves? How can developments in the understanding of neurobiology, trauma, and resilience inform and strengthen our work in the days and months ahead?

Join educators, school leaders, policymakers, and funders from around the country for this special hour-long presentation and conversation exploring how we move forward with mental health and equity in the lead.

Keynote featuring Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D., world-renowned teacher, clinician, and researcher on brain development and children’s trauma. Dr. Perry's work over the past three decades on the impact of abuse, neglect, and trauma on the developing brain has informed clinical practice, programs, and policy worldwide. His forthcoming book, What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing, is co-authored with Oprah Winfrey and will be available in spring 2021.

Drawing on a forthcoming report on lessons from the pandemic, BRYT Associate Director Dr. Courtney Tucker will lead a conversation with Dr. Perry on the application of his thinking to the mental health and equity challenges facing schools in this moment.
COVID-19 Vaccine Information for Licensed Social Workers
The state roll-out for COVID-19 vaccinations is moving forward with changes in eligibility and access announced frequently. General information and updates can be found at mass.gov/covidvaccine.

As of 1/21/21, all health care workers are eligible for the vaccine as part of Phase I. Most vaccination sites have indicated that this applies to clinicians working remotely / providing teletherapy. A social work license must be shown at time of appointment.

Because of limited vaccine supply, the state can only open up new appointment slots at mass (large-scale) vaccination sites about 1 week in advance, with the goal of opening new slots every Thursday. As of right now, appointments can only be booked online. Keep checking back to find availability.
MassHealth Open Enrollment Extended to March 23rd
Open enrollment in Massachusetts began November 1, 2020, and has been extended to March 23, 2021.

Open Enrollment is the time of the year where consumers can buy a new health insurance plan or change their current plan. If your employer doesn't offer health insurance or you cannot afford the plan offered by your employer, you can apply for individual insurance through the Massachusetts Health Connector.

Visit Health Care for All's website to read a helpful FAQ or call the HelpLine for assistance: 1-800-272-4232.
