A Message from the Executive Director

Spring is the season of newness and growth. The sun shines a little more, the trees and flowers bloom, and there is a buzz of excitement in the air. Spring is definitely in full swing here at Pivot, and there is much to celebrate.

I am honored and excited to announce that all four of our Pivot schools have been successful in securing new authorizers or a new charter for the upcoming school year. As a result of much hard work from our teachers, staff, board members and families, we prevailed! The Oak Grove Union School District, Chico Unified School District, Riverside County Office of Education and San Marcos Unified School District all said "Yes!" to having Pivot be a part of their communities. We are looking forward to our new partnerships with each of these districts and to being able to continue to provide the very best in education for our students.

I would be remiss if I did not say thank you to all of the dedicated families who showed up to our board meetings to proclaim their support for Pivot. The many parents and students who sat through the meetings to hold up signs or to speak on our behalf were a crucial part of our success, and I am so grateful to all of you. You are the reason we can continue to do what we do best - educate children.

We are nearing the end of the school year, and are excited for graduation. We will celebrate our esteemed Pivot San Diego Class of 2018 on June 7th at 4 pm at the Lakehouse Hotel. Please join us to honor these students at this incredibly special ceremony and reception.

So as we head into the final weeks of the school year, let us celebrate the past year of our successes together - our new charters, our dedicated families, our incredible staff and our successful students. We have much to be proud of at Pivot. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for such an amazing year. We have grown stronger together, and I cannot wait to see what amazing things we accomplish next.

Onward,

Jayna Gaskell

Pivot Selects New Curriculum for the 2018-19 School Year

Pivot Charter School has been reviewing and piloting curriculum for grades Tk-8th over the past year. We are excited to announce that the final selections have been made for the upcoming school year.

Lindsey Vining, Systems and Accountability Coordinator, and Meghan Coffey, Pivot North Bay EC and Curriculum Coordinator, began researching curriculum options in October, 2017. Pivot Board members Dr. Tom Halvorsen and Dr. Kevin Harrigan, both retired school superintendents, made up the curriculum selection subcommittee and provided guidance to Ms. Vining and Ms. Coffey. "Their years of experience in education and administration provided us with a good starting point, as well as an overview of the specific needs of our Pivot students and teachers," Ms. Vining said.

Proud Pivot Parents -
Jordan and Jennifer Burns

Pivot parents Jordan and Jennifer Burns have a son Cody, who is a sophomore at Pivot North Bay. This is Cody's second year at Pivot, and he has experienced academic success at the school. Jordan believes that Pivot helps students find success when traditional school doesn't work. He says, "There is not a one size fits all school, and there is room for different alternatives and non-traditional school settings to ensure that every child gets the education they need. Standardizing education leaves kids behind, and that is where Pivot leads - by capturing the students who are left behind in traditional schools."

Heather McGuire

Heather McGuire is an EC at Pivot North Bay. She is new to Pivot this year and teaches middle school. She has a multiple subject teaching credential from Humboldt State University.

Ms. McGuire has enjoyed her first year teaching at Pivot. She appreciates the ability to individualize the curriculum for each student.

Ms. McGuire and her family lost their home in the wildfires last fall, and she is relocating this summer to the Chico area. However, she will remain part of the Pivot family, as she will transition to teaching at Pivot North Valley in Chico.

Pivot Goes to Yosemite!

In April,  all four Pivot schools traveled to  Yosemite  for an overnight camping field trip. The students experienced hiking, fishing, camping and just having fun outdoors together. Pivot believes outdoor education is an important part of the learning experience, and we were excited to give our students this amazing opportunity.
