New Video! Meet Shelley Krause, NIOT Upstander in Princeton, New Jersey

NIOT-Princeton is a multi-racial, multi-faith group of individuals who stand together for racial justice and inclusive communities. 

NIOT-Princeton member Shelley Krause enjoys the monthly conversation series that the group produces with their local library called the Continuing Conversations on Race and White Privilege.

"It's been really valuable to make an intentional space in my life for dealing with racial justice and inequity," Shelley says. "For my life and for my work, having partners and a space within which to work has been vital — and I wish that for everybody." Watch now

Since the start of the pandemic, there has been an alarming increase in violence against Asians and Pacific Islanders nationwide. At the NIOT blog and on our Facebook page, we've been posting stories of the attacks and the many stories of communities who have been standing up to hate.

NIOT-Chesterfield Q&A: Starting a NIOT Group During the Pandemic

A high school student and a former mayor join forces to stand up to hate in a suburban New Jersey town founded in 1670. 

High school student Eesha Shrivastava and Rita Romeu started Chesterfield-NIOT in 2020. They decided to start the group after Eesha noticed some of her classmates made racist jokes. She'd also heard about some incidents involving teenagers spray painting swastikas on sidewalks. She wanted to take a stand and put a stop to it at her school and in her town. 

We zoomed in with Eesha and Rita to find out more about Chesterfield, a small farming community, about their growing group and what it's like to start a NIOT group during the pandemic. Read the Q&A

A 5th grader named Bella decided to wear her traditional ribbon skirt to "Formal Wear Day" at her school in Canada. An educator told her that her skirt was inappropriate and "didn't match." What happened next was a community standing up to support her.
