Winter to Spring at LLA

We are well into 2024 with plenty to celebrate. Our student enrollment continues to go up and the school is now operating at capacity. We are grateful for all the community who make Life Learning Academy such an exceptional place of radical love for Bay Area youth and young adults.

Health initiatives are a priority this Spring as we expand our programming. Field Day for students and staff was a "slam dunk" success!

New in Arts and Letters

Theater Class has Landed

We are thrilled to have our first ever drama class, in partnership with San Francisco’s African-American Shakespeare Company. We can already see the difference with students presenting newfound confidence, creativity, and a stronger sense of community.

Poetry in Action

In February, we welcomed renowned poet Mimi Tempestt in celebration of Black History month, in partnership with SF Public Library. Mimi presented to the school, and guest taught a  poetry workshop where students wrote collective poems.

Mobile Music

In February and March, the Oakland organization Beats, Rhymes, and Life rolled up in their mobile rap making van. Everyone flocked outside for a lesson in making rhymes, including the chance to record themselves in a real mobile recording studio.

We Are All In on Mental Health

A group of students attended the Teens Tackle Tobacco and Other Drugs Leadership Conference on the UC Berkeley Campus. Leaning into their leadership skills, they shared their insights and experiences with their peers.

We’re promoting Healthy Habits for the whole month of March. Students and staff alike have made pledges for small healthy changes, like less screen time or drinking more water. We have special offerings in meditation, substance use education, and fun physical activity challenges for everyone.

We now have three therapists in partnership with the Wright Institute, providing on-site counseling to our students, with plans to expand the number of available therapists next school year.

Keep reading for ways to support students with healthy initiatives!

Student Profile: Nixon is Moving Forward and Giving Back

We believe that there is no substitute for living a life of purpose. Nixon Ooi (2024 graduate) has not only been accepted to University of California, Riverside, he is advocating for his peers to bring STEM workshops to campus and share his passion for coding. Hear about his journey from the shelter to the dorm in this interview on KRON!
