Grantee Spotlight:

WE DECLARE

One of CAP's 2026 Statewide Community Regrant grantees is "We Declare: A Storytelling Project for Our Times"

2026 marks two anniversaries - the 250th of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the 20th of Ellen Schmidt’s Ithaca-based writing community, Writing through the Rough Spots (WTRS). From across the US and 15 countries, more than 100 people have participated in Ellen’s classes.

We Declare, a recent outgrowth of WTRS, is a storytelling project which shares a curated selection of writing from both past and present WTRS workshop attendees, and includes live readings, video recordings and a self-published book. These personal stories are not editorials, but provide a snapshot into this moment in American history, a period with uncanny parallels to 1776. The stories amplify compelling voices with the goal of building greater community through increased understanding and empathy.

Without client briefs, brand guidelines, or rigid grid systems to hold them back, these works offer a rare glimpse into the unfiltered imagination.

Solace Among Trees

Mara Alper, Karen Viola, and young artists

Gallery Night, July 3, 5-8pm

"'Solace Among Trees' exhibits our deep, reciprocal connection to trees, with a sense of the resilience and sanctuary trees offer. Viewers will be immersed in trees created in compelling styles. Mara Alper’s photo collages and assemblages are inspired by rhythmic patterns of fallen wood, leaves, and vines shaped by water and light. Karen Viola's mixed media and artist books offer distinctive portraits of trees she considers kin. Tree artwork created by young students from the Greater Ithaca Activities Center and the Southside Community Center after school programs will also be on view. MaraAlper.com / kvartworks.com
