Mizzen Beyond the Booth: Building Safe — and Real — Spaces for Youth

Through Beyond the Booth, Mizzen strives to ensure that the furniture, furnishings, and people-centered sensibility the team brings to exhibit halls have a life beyond the booth that benefits local out-of-school time programs. Far more than a furniture donation program, it’s a way to partner and pool ideas and resources to create next-level spaces for young people.

The concept is rooted in Mizzen Education’s mission. “Part of our mission statement talks about partnering with the out-of-school-time community, but there’s also this element of joy, curiosity, and love of learning,” said Mizzen Education’s CEO, Carlos Santini. “When we look at joy, there’s a direct connection to our exhibit space, and that then goes beyond the booth and into a classroom.”

The time of year has arrived for the

Frances McClelland Institute Vision Awards Nominations

The award categories are as follows: 

  • Frances McClelland Vision Award
  • This award honors a community leader with at least 15 years of dedication to improving the lives of children, youth, and families, embodying Frances McClelland's passion and vision.
  • Richard Elías Legacy Award
  • Recognizes an individual who promotes resilience, justice, and community heritage in Southern Arizona, mirroring Richard Elías's dedication and openness. Nominations of DACA recipients are encouraged.
  • Frances McClelland Youth Vision Award
  • Celebrates a youth leader or group (ages 11-22) dedicated to enhancing the well-being of their community, reflecting Frances McClelland's resilience and vision, with interests in fields like health, social work, and education.
  • Frances McClelland Spirit Organizational Award
  • Given to a 501(c)3 nonprofit that embodies Frances McClelland’s spirit and resilience, supports community and family resilience, and serves vulnerable members from birth to old age.

Prioritizing Staff Well-Being at the NRPA Annual Conference


Well-being has become increasingly crucial as mental health and loneliness reaches epidemic levels in the U.S. This is especially true in the workplace, where many adults spend so much of their time. Allison Colman, senior director of programs at National Recreation and Park Association, and Daniel Hatcher, senior director of strategic partnerships at Alliance for a Healthier Generation, co-authored a blog that looks at this crisis through the lens of park and recreation professionals.
