Happy Thanksgiving! 🍂

We in Canada, Ontario and Markham have so much to be thankful for. We enjoy the freedom to travel, the opportunity to live our lives as we choose, access to quality food, comfortable homes, education for our children and the promise of a brighter future. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on these blessings, appreciate the people who enrich our lives, and remember the importance of caring for one another and strengthening the community we share. May this Thanksgiving bring you and your loved ones warmth, happiness and gratitude for all that makes our community a wonderful place to call home.

As our voting days come closer, be sure to look in your mailbox for an envelope from the City of Markham containing the details for voting. I received mine last Friday so yours should be coming to you soon. If you haven't received yours yet, please see the item below "Have You Received Yours?".

If you like Classical music please consider attending one of the Kindred Spirits Orchestra Markham's concerts. There's nothing like live music to enrich and enliven your soul. See events below.

If you like music that's a little more casual why not attend a performance by the Markham Concert Band. They are a community band that often provides support to events such as the Unionville Terry Fox Run. See events below.

Watch for my election brochure that will be arriving in your mailbox this week. It contains details of my election platform.

Have a great week.

Don

Strong Mayor Powers

As Markham voters prepare for the October 26 municipal election, Ontario’s expanded strong-mayor legislation raises important questions about local democracy, accountability and decision making.

Introduced through the Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act, 2022, these powers are intended to accelerate housing construction and the infrastructure needed to support growth. Today, mayors in 216 Ontario municipalities, including the City of Markham, have access to these enhanced authorities.

What Can a Strong Mayor Do?

Strong-mayor powers allow mayors to propose municipal budgets, reorganize municipal departments, appoint or dismiss certain senior officials, and direct staff to advance provincial priorities. Mayors can also veto certain bylaws that conflict with provincial priorities, particularly those related to housing.

Council can override a mayor’s veto, but only with a two-thirds majority, making it a significant hurdle.

Efficiency Versus Accountability

Supporters argue these powers speed up decision-making and housing development. Critics warn that concentrating authority in one elected official can weaken council’s role, limit collaboration and reduce democratic checks and balances.

For Markham residents, the issue extends beyond who occupies the mayor’s office. It is about how decisions are made, whether councillors can effectively represent their constituents and how residents’ concerns are heard.

All Councillors elected to Markham Council need to be transparent, accountable, ready to represent all residents in the community and when required rally together to amass enough votes to override the Mayor's veto if that is in the best interest of residents.

More information on Strong Mayor Powers can be found here.

Who Doesn't Love Free Stuff?

Next Saturday, October 17th, is Curbside Giveaway Day. It's a great chance to clear out some stuff and maybe even clear out enough space to park your car in the garage this winter.

Markham residents are invited to put their unwanted, gently used items, such as sports equipment, garden tools and more at the curb for others to take for free. Please make certain to clearly mark your items as "free".

For more tips and details, visit markham.ca/curbsidegiveawayday.
