Thanksgiving is a time to express gratitude and celebrate with loved ones. Today, and every day, we are thankful for our community, whose members have continued to come together to support one another.

This year, Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn and partners including Council Member Farah N. Louis, Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin, District Leader Sarana Purcell, Hunger Free America, and Plaza Auto Mall distributed over 1,000 turkeys to the community. The Assemblymember also joined elected officials and the American Council of Minority Women and Pakistani American Youth Organization halal turkey distributions headed by Bazah Roohi and Waqil Ahmed.

Thanksgiving originated as a harvest festival over 400 years ago. The very first holiday took place in Patuxet, the area now known as Plymouth, Massachusetts.[1] During the first celebration, colonists and a group of Wampanoag Native Americans came together for a three-day feast. But, for many indigenous people, whose ancestor's were executed in the name of 'civilization' and who fought disease brought by settlers, it is a day of mourning[2].

Today, we remember this history and bring gratitude to our tables.

Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn represents the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn covering Ditmas Park, Flatbush, East Flatbush and Midwood. She is currently the Chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs), and incoming Chair of the Task Force on Women's Issues. She serves on the following committees: Housing, Government Operations, Education, Banks, Health, and Higher Education. sits on Governor Hochul's Domestic Violence Advisory Council and Mayor De Blasio's MWBE Task Force.

As a current Assemblymember, District Leader, and Chair of Brooklyn Democratic Party, Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn has been an outspoken advocate on issues concerning immigration, education, economic development, unemployment, education reform, health care access, senior citizen centers, affordable housing, school safety, women's and LGBTQ rights, as well as other issues affecting the quality of life in the community.
