How Physical Therapy Can Help Relieve or Prevent Back Pain.
October 18, 2024
By Ryan Zimmerman, PT, DPT
If you have back pain, you’re not alone. In fact, about 30 percent of the population in the U.S. probably has back pain right now. Because a stiff or aching spine can interfere with just about all of your daily activities, back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. Fortunately, you don’t have to live with back pain. There are many different treatment options available, ranging from conservative treatments to surgery. For many, physical therapy may be an effective and appropriate treatment option to help improve function or pain in the spine, or even prevent back pain altogether.
Physical therapists who specialize in spine treatment understand all of the various tools and treatment options to help you safely get back to where you want to be. (Note: McKenzie therapists are certified in the treatment of Neck and Back pain)

Your physical therapist may recommend exercises that improve posture, strengthen your core, and alleviate pressure on the spine. These exercises will vary person-to-person. For the best results, you should continue performing these exercises at home, as recommended by your physical therapist.
Other physical therapy treatments.
There are other ways physical therapists can help to relieve spine pain or improve mobility and function. Our physical therapists are also trained in other interventions, including electrical stimulation and dry-needling, which is gaining popularity. When treating spine pain with dry needling, a skilled physical therapist may use a small needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate small tissue muscles. This generates motor contractions and can improve movement related to your pain.

Her Face Was Unrecognizable After an Explosion. A Placenta Restored It.
The same qualities that make placentas so valuable during pregnancy make them profoundly useful for healing burns and wounds, too. So why do we throw so many away?
By Kate Morgan
Published Oct. 8, 2024
Searching for a way to help her, surgeons turned to a rarely utilized tool: human placenta. They carefully applied a thin layer of the donated organ to her face, which Ms. Townsend said was “the best thing they could have done, ever.” She still has scars from grafts elsewhere on her body, but the 47-year-old’s face, she said, “looks exactly like it did before.”
During pregnancy, the placenta forms in the uterus, where it provides the fetus with nutrients and antibodies, and protects it from viruses and toxins. Then, it follows the baby from the body, still filled with a wealth of stem cells, collagens and cytokines that doctors and researchers have realized make it uniquely useful after birth, too.
Research has found placenta-derived grafts can reduce pain and inflammation, heal burns, prevent the formation of scar tissue and adhesions around surgical sites and even restore vision. They’re also gaining poularity as a treatment for the widespread issue of chronic wounds.
“We call it a healing factor, but a better way to put it is it’s a regenerative factor,” said Dr. Scheffer Chuei-Goong Tseng, an ophthalmologist in Miami who’s spent decades studying the use of placental grafts to treat eye injuries and diseases and whose company manufactures and sells them. “Healing is broad; you can heal but still scar. We are talking about healing almost without scarring.”
Among gynecological surgeons, the grafts have proven effective at stopping scarring in the uterus after surgery for endometriosis. Orthopedic surgeons have found they can help repair torn cartilage during knee surgery. The National Institutes of Health lists hundreds of ongoing or completed trials using birth tissue in a range of procedures, including carpal tunnel, erectile dysfunction, arthritis, irregular heartbeat, tooth extraction and breast reconstruction.

What We Are Watching Right Now
Jane Addams: Together We Rise
If you are like us, you may have never heard the name Jane Addams, which is crazy since she single handedly is the reason that our country started passing child welfare and labor laws, she helped to establish the first childcare, kindergartens and playgrounds in our country and helped get women the right to vote.
She played a major role in establishing other organizations, clubs, and committees, including the American Civil Liberties Union; the Immigrants’ Protective League; the National Consumers League; the National Child Labor Committee; the Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers; the School of Social Work at the University of Chicago; and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. She worked for the National American Women’s Suffrage Association and was one of the founding members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). To put it mildly, Jane Addams was busy.
This is a much watch for every American.
