A MEAL AVAILABLE; MANY OFFICES CLOSE
Thanksgiving is upon us; a time for counting our blessings and for thinking of those in need .

Beulah Hill Baptist Church at 512 W. 23rd St. in Tifton is offering its annual Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday to anyone who needs a hot holiday meal . Between 11 a.m.-1 p.m. , the meal is available for dine in or carry out at the church annex .

The Thanksgiving holiday also see many offices closed , including Tifton city offices on Thursday and Friday . Tifton City Council's regular workshop for December , originally set for Monday, Dec. 2 , has been rescheduled to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9 .

The Tifton-Tift County Public Library will be closed on Nov. 28, 29, 30 and Dec. 1 for the Thanksgiving holiday . The library reopens Dec. 2 with a regularly scheduled Library Board meeting at noon that day.
OMEGA WOMAN, 109, GETS NATIONAL BIRTHDAY WISHES
One of the oldest citizens in Tift County was featured Monday on NBC-TV's "Today Show " during the birthday wishes segment.

Bertha Little , who turned 109 last month, was recognized for her recent birthday .

"Mother Little" still gets around and frequently visits Travelers Rest Missionary Baptist Church on South Ridge Avenue with her daughter Nettie , who is a member of the congregation .

"We thank God for his continued blessings on her ," the church noted on social media .

TIFTAREA ACADEMY STUDENT
WINS GEOGRAPHY DECATHLON
Wyatt Thompson , a junior at Tiftarea Academy , won the Eighth Annual Geography Decathlon on Nov. 19 .

Second place went to senior Hays Jones and third to junior Lleyton Callison , both Tift County High School students. The top three finishers received a check (first place: $500 ; second: $250 ; third: $100 ) and a medal .

The Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence sponsors the event and welcomes all area high school students . The event was hosted by the Tifton-Tift County Public Library. 

Dr. Bret Wagenhorst , who serves on the education foundation board, has been the prime mover behind the event since its inception . His support team includes Dr. Renata Elad , Paul Horst , Keri Jones and Margaret Kelley

To qualify for the buzzer rounds , students must first finish in the top 12 on a 25-minute written test . The next rounds are conducted on stage in front of a packed house. The three division winners then face off in the final round .

Two teachers played a major role in preparing students for the competition – Jon Koran of Tiftarea Academy and Shelley Fandel of Tift County High .
KIWANIS 'RUN FOR KIDS' ON DEC. 7
The 15th annual Kiwanis Run for the Kids 5K/one-mile run/walk is at 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 , beginning near the corner of Forrest Avenue and 4th Street (near the Tifton fire station across from the water tower ).

Prizes will be awarded to fastest runners in two categories and for the best Christmas costume . Early entry fee is $20 adult, $10 child with teams receiving $5 off per member before Nov. 30 . Add $5 after Nov. 30.

Children doing one mile get medallions ; Christmas gifts and Grinch-themed T-shirts will be available to other participants.

ABAC CHRISTMAS CONCERT SET DEC. 3
Sounds of the season will ring through the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Dec. 3 when the Department of Fine Arts presents its annual Holiday Music Christmas Celebration .

Dr. Susan Roe , fine arts department head, said the concert begins at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths Tickets will be available at the door for $10 per person.  Proceeds go toward ABAC music scholarships , and seating is limited.

“The entire community is invited to join ABAC faculty, staff and students for a night of holiday cheer ,” Roe said. “This concert is perfect for every member of the family.” 

Dr. Jennifer Huang and Gina Lawhon , pianists for the evening, will open with “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Dance of the Reed Flutes” from “The Nutcracker.”  Roe will then direct the ABAC Chamber Choir in “Ding Dong Merrily on High.”

Dr. Brian Ray will then offer one of his two readings for the event.  Stephanie Davis will sing “Ave Maria,” and Tyler Bennett will sing “Sweet Little Jesus Boy.”

ABAC Arts Connection Director Wayne Jones will lead the audience in the Christmas carols “The First Noel,” “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” “O' Come All Ye Faithful,” and “Silent Night.”   Landon Rowe will follow with “Mary, Did You Know?”

The Voices of ABAC will conclude with “There is Faint Music” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Directed by Roe , the Voices of ABAC include Stephanie Davis, Cierra Pineda, Brittany Griffin, Skylar Loyd, Caleb Cunningham, Nyjee Sykes, Grant Hudson, Jordyn James and Landon Rowe.

Refreshments will be available in the lobby of the adjacent music building after the concert.
FORMER CLASS PRESIDENT TO BE ABAC SPEAKER
Cain Thurmond , a former freshman class president at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College , will be the guest speaker at the ABAC fall commencement ceremony Dec. 12

A total of 224 students are expected to receive diplomas at the 10 a.m. event in Gressette Gym .

Thurmond is a CSX account manager, military and machinery, who is based in Chicago, Ill . While an ABAC student , he was a member of the ABAC Ambassadors and helped to create the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at ABAC and served as a national FFA vice president .

After completing his associate degree in 2011 , Thurmond received his bachelor of science degree in agricultural and applied economics from the University of Georgia in 2014 . He is pursuing an MBA degree through a joint program between Purdue University and Indiana University .

Thurmond is a member of the ABAC Foundation board of directors .
