Neighbors,
I want to wish you a happy Thanksgiving!
If you think the photo above looks familiar, you’re right. We recreated artist Norman Rockwell’s iconic Thanksgiving painting. While you may recognize it, you might not know its name: “Freedom from Want.”
It shows a family gathered at the table convivially engaging with each other for their holiday meal. Rockwell’s painting marked the third in his series to illustrate the Four Freedoms that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed in his 1941 State of the Union speech.
While Rockwell’s painting is now synonymous with the holiday, freedom from want still isn’t a reality for everyone, and there are many in our community who face hunger and want.
However, you can make a difference this holiday season. Consider donating to local food banks and nonprofits — especially cash. Because food banks can purchase supplies at wholesale prices, cash donations multiply your generosity. The Capital Area Food Bank says every dollar given provides two meals to people in need for instance.
These are many Hunter Mill District nonprofits that need your help, and here are a few that support our neediest residents:
If you prefer to donate food or toiletries, check out the county’s Emergency Food Access Providers interactive map. A recently added “donate” button allows you to find groups that need donations and what kind of items they’re accepting.
As you gather around your table tomorrow with loved ones, I want to express my thanks that I’m able to serve you as Hunter Mill District Supervisor. Happy holidays!
Regards,
Walter
