I am so glad for this partnership with FaithWorks that is blessing our men.”

The following article from

our ministry partner,

A Place Called Home in Lindsay,

is an example of the work that your donation to FaithWorks supports.

By David Tilley,

Chief Operations Officer

First, a bit of positivity.

In June, A Place Called Home opened the doors on our new 19 bed emergency shelter for men, women and families with children. Following an interesting year of construction which saw delays due to everything from COVID to the border convoy disruptions, we started welcoming clients back to a permanent building from the motel where we have been operating for over 2 years. The new shelter offers individual rooms, expanded laundry facilities, increased accessibility and more options for future expansion. Our old shelter buildings are being renovated to create an additional 11 rooms for rent. This is something sorely needed in our area.

Now, some of the unfortunate realities of the current state of our area.

The current housing situation in our area (and many others) combined with an ever-present opioid crisis, inflation and the rising interest rates (of which the costs will be passed on to our clients as landlords try to maintain profitability) means that we are quickly hitting a point of total unaffordability for those on a fixed income, social assistance or disability. In the Kawartha Lakes the housing wait list has now exceeded 10 years. A room in a rooming house is averaging upwards of $600 per month. Ontario Works pays $760 per month for an individual.

For those families or for individuals who require special accommodation, it gets worse. With the rise in the value of housing, more landlords are selling their properties and displacing renters. We have seen a significant rise in the lengths of time people are remaining in our shelter. This is not due to financial resources but due to a lack of available places to rent. Families of 5 or 6 could be in shelter for many months before an adequate space is found and if special accommodation are required, such as a wheelchair ramp or even something as simple as no stairs, the wait can be even longer.

We are grateful for all the assistance we receive through FaithWorks.
