How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain
|
|
The holidays are here. We’re entering the season of baked goods, cocktails, and comfort foods. We meet friends at cozy coffee shops and sip seasonal lattes, then go home to snuggle up on the couch. Winter weight gain is real.
Although seasonal weight gain varies from person to person, there have been surveys that show an average of a five to seven pound gain in weight in winter.

Warning Signs About the First Post-pandemic Winter
It may not be as bad as last year’s … but it certainly won’t be good.
This fall, unlike the one before it, and the one before that, America looks almost like its old self. Schools and universities are in session; malls, airports, and gyms are bustling with the pre-holiday rush; handwashing is passé, handshakes are back, and strangers are packed together on public transport, nary a mask to be seen. On its surface, the country seems ready to enjoy what some might say is our first post-pandemic winter.
Americans are certainly acting as if the crisis has abated, and so in that way, at least, you could argue that it has.
“If you notice, no one’s wearing masks,” President Joe Biden told 60 Minutes in September, after proclaiming the pandemic “over.” Almost no emergency protections against the virus are left standing; we’re dismantling the few that are. At the same time, COVID is undeniably, as Biden says, “a problem.” Each passing day still brings hundreds of deaths and thousands of hospitalizations; untold numbers of people continue to deal with long COVID, as more join them. In several parts of the country, health-care systems are struggling to stay afloat. Local public-health departments, underfunded and understaffed, are hanging by a thread. And a double surge of COVID and flu may finally be brewing.
We are sicker as a nation this year (trifecta of RSV, Covid and flu due to no precautions left in place), and there has been a mass evacuation of health care workers. Our advice, don't get sick or get into an accident...

The Benefits of Giving Back
Those who perform acts of generosity are proven to have lower blood pressure, less anxiety and depression, and lower risks of dementia and cardiovascular problems. Some studies also show a correlation between philanthropy and increased lifespan. Point blank, being generous is not just about making others feel good.

Annapolis Hosts ‘Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos' Festival on October 30
The City of Annapolis will host a Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead Festival at Maryland Hall in Annapolis starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 29th. Attendees are encouraged to dress up to celebrate Day of the Dead, a traditional holiday celebrated in Mexico and many Latin American countries. One of the favorite traditions at Day of the Dead celebrations is sugar skull makeup, a Day of the Dead face painting technique. Come early to get a colorful sugar skull face painting at one of multiple booths at the event.
In Mexico and many Latin American countries, Day of the Dead is a celebration to remember friends and family who are no longer with us. It is typically a joyful celebration, not a mournful one. The date generally falls the day after Halloween and coincides with the Anglo “All Saint’s Day” observance.
In Annapolis, this will be the City’s fourth Day of the Dead celebration, where it has gained increasing attention from around the region.

Did You Know?
-Apples are great for heart health. They are high in fiber which helps improve cholesterol levels
-A medium apple can fill you up for under 100 calories, making it a great snack for weight loss
-The fiber in apples can also aid in digestion
Because of the apples' soluble fiber, apples are able to slow the absorption of sugar into the blood steam and may improve blood sugar levels, this helps lower your odds of developing type 2 diabetes
