Good Earth
More Than a Store

Good Earth is a locally owned produce and garden center that specializes in providing the freshest and tastiest local fruits, veggies, clean meats, eggs and dairy from local farmers. We also support local bakers, families and artisans by selling amazing breads, jarred goods, dried goods, soaps, candles and oh so much more! Over the years, our faithful customers have repeatedly requested non-local produce that cannot be grown in our area, so we provide these products too. You can get almost anything else on-line or at the big box stores, but get the freshest produce and most beautiful plants right here at Good Earth. Now that fall has set in and the holidays are around the corner, our store will be stocked with seasonal produce such as pie pumpkins, squashes, greens, apples, nuts, citrus and homemade breads, pies and cakes! The greenhouse will boast beautiful Christmas trees of all shapes and sizes, including hypoallergenic trees! We also have yards of garland and wreaths of different sizes. Everything you need for the holidays is right here at Good Earth!

A is for Applesauce
Cynthia F Catts,  RD, LD

Not everyone digests fruit easily. If you tend toward gas, bloating or constipation, a raw apple might not be your jam. But if you love apples but hate constipation (and who doesn't?), know that cooking them makes them easier to digest! Apples are loaded with pectin, a type of fiber that feeds good gut bacteria. Research suggests that, because of pectin, apples may have a protective effect against obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

My quick applesauce recipe is this: cut one or two peeled apples into chunks, place them in a saucepan over medium heat, add an inch of water and if you'd like, around 1/2 tsp cinnamon (also good for digestion). Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes or until soft. Let cool and mash to desired consistency.

Here at Good Earth we currently have ELEVEN varieties of apples! Pick from Fuji, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, Winesap, Pink Lady, Nittany, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Empire, Stayman, and Cameo apples.  Ask Cathy for recommendations based on whether you want to enjoy them raw, cook them on the stove or bake them in a pie.

Your One-Stop Shop for Last-Minute Meal Prep

This was going to be the year that you planned ahead for your Thanksgiving dinner. You were going to spend all of last weekend shopping, chopping, and stocking so that you could just crank the oven up to 350 and coast your way through Thanksgiving day. But maybe it's the day before Thanksgiving and you're realizing that all you have in the kitchen is a frozen turkey and a can of cranberry sauce. It's okay- this is a safe space- we're not here to judge you for spending 20 hours last weekend watching Holiday Baking Championship (we've all been there). We're here to help! We have everything you need to whip up a stunning Thanksgiving dinner that the whole family will swear you must have spent a month preparing. You already know we have all the fresh, delicious produce to complement your turkey, like collards, winter squash, butter beans, and sweet potatoes. But if you're feeling a tiny bit crunched for time (or if you'd rather spend tomorrow morning finishing that last episode on Netflix), we also have some amazing prepared side dishes like blue cheese mac n' cheese, edamame succotash, and creamed corn. They're frozen fresh and ready to bake! While you're here, pick up dessert. We have a mouth-watering selection of homemade pies and cakes that will make you want to sell your kitchen-aid and never worry about home baking ever again. We are closed on Thanksgiving Day so that our team can spend it with their loved ones- so stop by today to stock up on all things Thanksgiving!

Get Your Christmas Tree a Backup Crew

This time of year, we all know that the Christmas trees are the stars of the show here in the garden center, and who could blame them for loving the spotlight? The heady, nostalgic aroma...the play of icicle lights on dark green boughs...the twinkle of ornaments dangling over a pile of presents...but the other plants are getting jealous, so today we're giving them their due. And they deserve it! Every good lead needs a solid, talented crew of backup singers and dancers, and every Christmas tree needs an assortment of living accessories to truly work their magic and bring a cohesive festive vibe to your home. Fresh in this week, we have all the backup crew your tree needs! You'll find darling miniature herb trees of lavender and rosemary, perfect as a centerpiece with garland or ribbon. Their festive cheer and amazing botanical scents work wonders in any room of the house. We also have small cypress trees! Lightly decorated, they make charming miniature Christmas trees and are the perfect size for your office desk or a child's bedroom. If you'd like to bring some holiday blooms into your home, our shelves are filled with Christmas cacti, amaryllis, and paperwhites, all budded up and getting ready to bloom! Of course, these also make thoughtful and gorgeous gifts for a hostess, teacher, or boss this season (bonus points). Finally, don't forget about poinsettias! Ours are absolutely stunning, and you have multiple sizes and a variety of colors to choose from. So don't force your Christmas tree to sing a solo this year- add some harmony and flair with cute mini trees, gorgeous holiday bulbs, and classic poinsettias!
