Last year, Thanksgiving took on a whole new meaning for me. During the Sunday four days before Thanksgiving, I was sitting at church, talking with several of the young people that attend Thrive’s life group. I knew that the children were going to be on break, and I asked them if, now that they live in America, they did anything special for the Thanksgiving holiday or if it was going to be a typical day. All of them said that it would be an ordinary day except that many of their parents would be off work that day. Then one of the nine-year olds asked me what I do for Thanksgiving....
I began describing my family’s traditions- turkey, dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce, and pies. I explained how my family would go around the table and say something they were thankful for, we would pray together, and then we would eat. Following my description of this all-American family tradition, this same child asked me with all sincerity, “Ms. Kori, may I come to your house for Thanksgiving?” The group sitting with us then echoed her request. My original plans of hosting my little family of three suddenly changed course to hosting a houseful of twenty. That’s only a 567% increase, so why not? I said yes, they could come. Thankfully, my husband is very understanding of how my brain and heart work, sometimes out of sync with each other.
