Intel in Ohio

Happy anniversary, Ohio! It’s hard to believe it’s already been two years since we announced plans to invest more than $20 billion in the construction of two leading edge semiconductor fabs in the Buckeye State.

We are proud of the progress at the Ohio One campus and around the state. We thank you for working alongside us to build workforce opportunities through education initiatives, to build resilient growth for businesses through supply chain partnerships, and to build greater prosperity for Ohioans through community engagement and volunteer opportunities.

We ended 2023 by attending many wonderful festive holiday events in the small towns and big cities across the region. Thank you for including us in your tree lighting ceremonies and volunteer events.

And, the new year is already off to a great start as we head into February! This past month, we visited K-12 and higher education campuses all over Ohio in support of our commitment to help develop and attract a pipeline of skilled talent from within the region. Intel’s support includes a range of education initiatives, including K-12 science, technology, education, arts and math (STEAM) programs; collaborative research projects; and semiconductor-specific curricula for associate and undergraduate degree programs. Further, Intel has committed to invest $50 million over the next decade in partnership with Ohio universities, community colleges, and other institutions of higher education.

We’re grateful to meet with so many incredible students, faculty and administrators. We’ve also been visiting with chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, nonprofits, community groups, elected officials and families to work together and build a brighter future for what is becoming the Silicon Heartland.

We’re so excited to be building in Ohio, and we’ll continue to make considerable progress on the construction of our factories and supporting facilities this year.

Intel Ohio 2023 Recap

Ohio Construction Milestones

Since we began construction on the Ohio One campus, crews have worked more than 1.6 million hours without a lost time incident, have poured more than 32,000 cubic yards of concrete and installed 210,000 linear feet of underground conduit (equivalent to just over 700 football fields).

We’re building the Ohio One campus from the ground up, starting with the underground utility level. Electrical panels that support the fab are located here, along with the “mains” — large utility pipes and ductwork that feed up to the lateral pipes in the clean subfab. Also here are chiller and compressor systems. Once the campus is open, the workers who monitor the equipment on this level won’t wear bunny suits. Instead, they will wear street clothes, hard hats, and safety glasses.

Intel Fabs have four levels – the interstitial and fan deck, the clean room level, the clean sub fab level and the utility level – each with its own unique functions to bring semiconductors to life.

Our Commitment to Education

Preparing K12 students to flourish in our technology-driven world requires innovation and adaptability. At Intel, we believe introducing youth to technology-supported, skills-based learning practices can prepare them to succeed.

From New Albany to Johnstown to Columbus to Cleveland and Cincinnati, we’re grateful to spend time with students of all ages to explore hands-on learning to spark their critical thinking, problem solving, social and emotional skills, and design thinking.

Our engineers in Ohio continue to canvas the entire Buckeye State, making visits to career, community colleges, and universities to help develop and attract a pipeline of skilled homegrown talent.

They’ve recently visited Central State University, University of Toledo, Central Ohio Technical College, Columbus School for Girls, Columbus City Schools, and THE Ohio State University, with many more visits planned the rest of the month.

Investing in a Better Future Through Sustainable Silicon

The next era of sustainable computing is being shaped by diverse voices, innovative thinking, and captivating ideas. That’s why we appreciate opportunities to attend events across Ohio so we can work together to address critical sustainability challenges. We recently shared Intel’s commitment to water conservation and restoration at The Watershed Management Association of Ohio conference. And, we were amazed at the indoor vertical gardens at the Columbus Downtown High School where culinary students grow and harvest fresh foods.

We also had the opportunity to listen and to learn during the National Day of Healing hosted by the Environmental Professionals Network at THE Ohio State University. The program addressed land access and explored the human connection to the environment through farming, gardening, and other outdoor activities and the ability for agricultural experiences and acknowledgement of historical injustices to serve as healing towards racial equity.

We were humbled by our visit to the Great Circle Earthworks, part of the Newark Earthworks, the largest set of geometric earthen enclosures in the world. These masterpieces of landscape architecture were built by Native Indians between 1,600 and 2,000 years ago.

Ohio’s Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks is the USA’s 25th addition to the World Heritage List and Ohio’s first site to receive this classification.

Thank you to the Ohio History Connection for preserving and sharing stories to connect to the places and to the people who came before us.

Intel in the Community

We were happy to see many of you at the Columbus Urban League’s Empowerment Day, MLK Day service events, the educational series with the New Albany Community Foundation, and events with Chambers of Commerce across the region.

2024 is off to a strong start and we want to reflect on the end of 2023 to thank you for inviting us to holiday events in your communities. Our Intel team also attended numerous holiday tree lighting events including the Ohio Statehouse with Governor and First Lady DeWine, the New Albany Chamber of Commerce tree lighting and the Newark Courthouse lighting. Our Intel engineers even built an Intel inspired gingerbread chocolate “Chip” factory to be displayed at The Works.

We wrapped up the year by attending the Johnstown holiday parade where members of the Intel team hosted the gingerbread village and walked alongside the STEAM float hosted by the Johnstown Chamber of Commerce. Encouraging students to explore STEM activities is part of Intel’s longstanding commitment to volunteering and education.
