Our Branch at Work:
STEM Programs
for Middle School Girls
Our branch is once again gearing up to select middle school girls to attend AAUW's Tech Trek summer STEM camps (week-long residential camps on college campuses, with a virtual alternative) and the Girls In Ocean Science (GIOS) 1-day conference at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. We will be selecting 10 girls for each program. Both programs employ a hands-on approach to introducing girls to a variety of STEM fields, while connecting them with women STEM professionals who provide information and inspiration. To volunteer to work with either committee, please contact us!

Membership Matters
Join a Branch Team!
“I’m new to the branch and I want to help but I don’t know anyone.”
And the answer is: the best way to meet new people is to join a branch team to help accomplish our branch’s goals. These teams mostly work on short-term projects—Literary Luncheon, reviewing scholarship applications, tutoring elementary schoolers, interviewing middle school Tech Trek applicants—all supporting our branch mission while enabling you to connect with other like-minded members. Volunteer efforts are critical to the ongoing success of our branch activities, programs, and advocacy efforts. For more information, visit our branch website or contact anyone on the membership committee: Gail Brooks, Venita DeSouza or Jean Brotherton.

Invite a friend to the Literary Luncheon on March 11th where you can network with other members, learn about branch programs, participate in the silent auction, and enjoy a delicious lunch and engaging featured authors. Before or after the program, be sure to steer your friend to the membership table where joining AAUW on that day is a bargain $84.50 —a big savings of $32.50! You can also pay your 2023-24 regular $117 dues at that time by check or credit card – cash works too!

Gov Trek Begins!
Gov Trek is a five-week, entirely virtual program produced by AAUW California, that aims to inspire high school girls to consider seeking public and elected office. The member branches play two very important roles–we reach out to offer the opportunity to interested girls, and we provide volunteers to help implement the sessions. Our branch has several girls attending the 2023 inaugural program. We received this news from AAUW California about the first session on January 28th:
| |
Exciting News! AAUW California 2023 Gov Trek’s inaugural session started with a video address from fellow Californian, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi. We were privileged to have the first woman Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives greet us as we begin our journey together to explore careers in public office and elected positions. | |

Legal Advocacy Fund
AAUW’s Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) addresses the barriers of unfair pay, pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and Title IX violations by informing people of their rights and by using the legal system to seek justice and change. Created in 1981 by AAUW members, the LAF has provided millions of dollars to help balance the scales of justice for people working toward gender equity through the legal system.
