Joanna needs some Love

We are asking for your help for Joanna Wahler, our massage therapist.

Two weeks ago during the snow, she slipped and fell (she bit it) on the ice resulting in a spiral fracture of her fibula and was operated on last week to put it back together.

Unfortunately, she will be non weightbearing for 12 weeks and will be unable to work during that time.

We are asking our generous community to donate even a small amount so Joanna can cover her expenses during her 3-4 month long recovery time.

Every little bit helps, thank you for supporting our gal while she is down and out!

Don't Wait to Focus on Balance

Assessing and strengthening balance is essential before it becomes problematic

By Alana Sheeren

January 3, 2024

Strength, balance and flexibility are the dynamic trio at the heart of healthy aging. All three are necessary to remain physically strong, safe and independent as long as possible.

With a growing emphasis on the importance of strength training for older adults, balance is often assumed to be good enough until it becomes a problem.

There are excellent reasons, however, to address balance proactively. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of deaths from falls in adults ages 65 and older increased by 41% over the decade from 2012 to 2021, and falls cause 3 million hospital visits and 1 million hospital stays for older adults each year.

Balance begins to decline after age 50, and a recent study observed that balance worsens significantly every five years, starting around 55. The same study found that the inability to balance on one leg for 10 seconds later in life was associated with a greater risk of death from all causes.

Breakthrough in treating Alzheimer’s using targeted drug delivery reported in New England Journal of Medicine

WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute achieves greater reduction in brain amyloid plaques by combining focused ultrasound with antibody treatment

Posted on 1/3/2024

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A potential advancement in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease was announced today by researchers at the West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI). A first in-human study, featured in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrates that focused ultrasound in combination with anti-amyloid-beta monoclonal antibody treatment can accelerate the clearance of amyloid-beta plaques in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Anti-amyloid-beta (Aβ) monoclonal antibody therapies, such as aducaumab, lecanemab, and donanemab, can reduce amyloid-beta plaques and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. Until now, these promising antibody therapies had limitations in reaching the brain due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB), a protective barrier between blood vessels and the brain that blocks harmful substances from getting into the brain, but also limits the access of therapeutics. More than 98 percent of drugs do not readily cross the BBB, thus requiring systemic treatments with higher doses and more frequent therapies.

Jennifer's Note: this is a potential game changer in the treatment of Alzheimer's, Guided US helps to break down the blood brain barrier to enable the medications to work more effectively.

You might be drinking a lot of plastic

Francis Scialabba
If tap water had a head of marketing, they would be whipping their shirt around in the air right now: A study published this week found that the typical plastic bottle of water contains up to 100 times as many plastic fragments as scientists previously thought.
The new research is the first to scour water bottles for “nanoplastics,” which are even more minuscule than microplastics and may account for the vast majority of plastic contamination. That’s especially concerning because nanoplastics are small enough to enter the bloodstream, breach cell walls, and pass into a fetus.
Here’s what researchers at Columbia University and Rutgers University found after testing bottled water from three popular (unnamed) American brands:
  • One-liter bottles of water contain anywhere from 110,000 to 370,000 plastic particles—90% of them are nanoplastics.
  • Much of that plastic comes from the bottles themselves, but particles are also present at every stage of water production, the researchers wrote.
We’re eating plastic, too. Consumer Reports recently found a “widespread” presence of plastic in foods, with plastic showing up in 84 of the 85 foods it tested, including in many popular items found at grocery stores.
What now? There’s still no concrete data on how plastic affects our bodies, but if you’re worried, you can
1) swap plastic for glass when possible-use those glass jars you usually recycle to store leftovers instead of Tupperware
2) drink filtered tap water, which has fewer microplastics
3) avoid microwaving plasticware.

Making a Difference One Bowl at a Time

On February 11,2024 just before two teams face off in a “super” NFL championship game, volunteers in Annapolis will kick off their own SOUPer Bowl, a donation-only lunch to support homeless prevention and related educational training services to people in Anne Arundel County.

Sunday, February 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Heritage Baptist (1740 Forest Drive, Annapolis) will host the 18th Annual SOUPer Bowl Lunch for the Light House Homeless Prevention Center. Volunteers will ladle soups prepared by locally renowned Chef Zachary Pope. Menu soups include Chicken Noodle, Baked Potato and Chili. Guests will also enjoy salad, fresh rolls, and dessert.

“We were all shocked by the recent fire at the Light House and thankful no one was hurt,” said Scott Shelton, Heritage Baptist pastor. “We appreciate their dedicated staff working to get all residents back in place and hope our event will support their effort.”

The public is invited and admission is free, but donations are requested to benefit the Light House. This year, SOUPer Bowl volunteers hope to raise $8500. Donations can be made at the event or online now at heritageloves.com/onlinegiving and selecting “SOUPer Bowl” as the reason for your donation. One hundred percent of the money donated goes directly to the Light House. Since 2007, this event has raised over $50,000 cumulatively for the Light House.

Attendees are encouraged to wear favorite NFL team jerseys that day, whether your team is in the big game or not. Guests are welcome to attend worship service with Pastor Scott Shelton at 10:30 a.m., prior to the SOUPer Bowl lunch.

Heritage Baptist is an affiliate congregational partner of the shelter. For more information, contact the church office at 410-263-6680, or see the church web site at heritageloves.com More information about the Light House Homeless Prevention Center is at annapolislighthouse.org
