 What's New at the Nursery

Hello Fellow Plant Enthusiasts!
February is the month when we prepare for spring. I just wish this weather would make up it's mind! One week it's 74 degrees and sunny and the next it's 30 degrees at night. Either way, spring is just around the corner and the daylight hours will be longer soon enough!
Plant Talk
This month the nursery will be running not one, but
two special pre-order programs. Our
rose pre-order program will be in full effect all month as well as our
fruit tree pre-order program.
Otto and Son's Nursery is one of the largest growers of roses and fruit trees in southern California and we are happy to offer you a
20% discount
on any roses or fruit trees from them when you order in advance with us through the end of this month. This includes David Austin roses, citrus, stone fruit trees, and more.
The nursery is really starting to load up with plants including our
indoor plant section, which are now
20% off during the month of February. You must come take a peek, there is something for everyone. Whether you're into trees such as
Ficus lyrata, Ficus triangularis, Ficus 'Alli', Ficus 'Audrey' (coming soon) or the many types of
Dracaenas and
palms, or just looking for a plant to begin your collection (or addiction, lol) we have lots to choose from and are always expanding our selection.
Some of my favorite indoor plants include the black-leafed ZZ known as
Raven
,
Monstera adansonii and deliciosa(below right),
Epiphyllum anguliger
(ric rac cactus), many types of
Sansevieria
(they are so easy to grow and maintain!),
Rhapidophora tetrasperma
(coming mid March
), or
Peperomia 'Raindrop'.
I love watching people leave our nursery with a new houseplant to call their own!
Valentine's Day is right around the corner and how better to let someone know how much you care than to give them a plant they can love for years to come. Pink is the theme and there is plenty to choose from. Try
Anigozanthos (kangaroo paw) in full bloom for sunny areas, or
pink jasmine (bud stage).
Kalanchoe pumila (below left) is a succulent with pink blooms this time of the year, or
Chamelaucium 'Purple pride'
(below right), as well as
osteospermum
(African daisies) really shine this time of the year.
Pre-blooming pink jasmine,
azaleas,
camellias and sweet
Valentine's Day gifts
Try
camellias
such as 'Sweet Emily Kate', 'Minatu-no-haru', or 'Nuccio's pearl' or
cyclamen
for those lower light areas will bloom throughout the spring
. Flowering
anthuriums
and
orchids
will also impress and last for a long time. Living plants mean much more than cut flowers for Valentine's Day.

February Gardening Tips
At the top of this month's gardening tasks are planting and pruning trees and shrubs. In San Diego County, we can plant trees of all kinds: fruit trees, shade trees and flowering trees. It is an excellent time to transplant mature or established trees and shrubs while they are dormant. Don't fertilize newly planted trees or shrubs until after they have started to grow and then only very lightly the first year.
