What's New at the Nursery
.....by Steven Froess
Hello Fellow Plant Enthusiasts!
February is the month when we prepare for spring. I just wish this weather would make up it's mind! One week it's 74 degrees and sunny and the next it's 30 degrees at night. Either way, spring is just around the corner and the daylight hours will be longer soon enough!
This month the nursery will be running not one, but
two special pre-order programs. Our
rose pre-order program will be in full effect all month as well as our
fruit tree pre-order program.
Otto and Son's Nursery is one of the largest growers of roses and fruit trees in southern California and we are happy to offer you a
on any roses or fruit trees from them when you order in advance with us through the end of this month. This includes David Austin roses, citrus, stone fruit trees, and more.
The nursery is really starting to load up with plants including our
indoor plant section, which are now
20% off during the month of February. You must come take a peek, there is something for everyone. Whether you're into trees such as
Ficus lyrata, Ficus triangularis, Ficus 'Alli', Ficus 'Audrey' (coming soon) or the many types of
palms, or just looking for a plant to begin your collection (or addiction, lol) we have lots to choose from and are always expanding our selection.
Some of my favorite indoor plants include the black-leafed ZZ known as
Monstera adansonii and deliciosa(below right),
(ric rac cactus), many types of
(they are so easy to grow and maintain!),
(coming mid March
I love watching people leave our nursery with a new houseplant to call their own!
Valentine's Day is right around the corner and how better to let someone know how much you care than to give them a plant they can love for years to come. Pink is the theme and there is plenty to choose from. Try
Anigozanthos (kangaroo paw) in full bloom for sunny areas, or
pink jasmine (bud stage).
Kalanchoe pumila (below left) is a succulent with pink blooms this time of the year, or
Chamelaucium 'Purple pride'
(below right), as well as
(African daisies) really shine this time of the year.
Pre-blooming pink jasmine,
camellias and sweet
Valentine's Day gifts
such as 'Sweet Emily Kate', 'Minatu-no-haru', or 'Nuccio's pearl' or
for those lower light areas will bloom throughout the spring
will also impress and last for a long time. Living plants mean much more than cut flowers for Valentine's Day.
That's all for now folks! Please come in to see what we've got. Hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day and I hope to see you all at the nursery soon.

February Gardening Tips
At the top of this month's gardening tasks are planting and pruning trees and shrubs. In San Diego County, we can plant trees of all kinds: fruit trees, shade trees and flowering trees. It is an excellent time to transplant mature or established trees and shrubs while they are dormant. Don't fertilize newly planted trees or shrubs until after they have started to grow and then only very lightly the first year.

We are pleased to announce...
that we are now carrying San Diego Seed Company at Anderson's La Costa! Located inside our dry goods building, you will find locally sourced herbs, veggies and flowering plant seeds perfect for your Southern California garden.
In 2010, when the owner came to the conclusion that few companies were producing regionally adapted seeds for our climate, she took an oath to produce organic, regionally adapted seeds that gardeners, farmers and market growers could depend on. This oath has led to the amazing development of San Diego Seed Company. Their company not only produces organic heirloom varieties well adapted for the SoCal growers, but also facilitates and promotes ethical seed production aimed at providing growers the best varieties for their success.
Check out our display of San Diego Seeds at Anderson's La Costa, and check out their website for seed selection, planting tips and more!
