Collin County Local Politics
By Bill Christman
The good news, the book burners seem to be taking time off. Don’t know what they are doing but I bet it is not reading books.
In both the Plano and McKinney latest city council meetings have seen members of the community wanting the cites to start to help with the homeless issues. With McKinney volunteers looking for help and asking for more support from the community. Especially with hosting Thanksgiving Dinner at First McKinney Baptist Church for the homeless and the community.
McKinney also responded to the public in modifying the Name of Veterans Memorial Park to Corporal RD Foster Veterans Memorial Park, after the Vietnam veteran who did so much to commemorate veterans in Collin County.
The rest of the McKinney meeting was dealing with land usage issues, rezoning, and easements for developing the growing city. Nearly all passing the council vote unanimously.
Richardson latest business part of their meeting ended with the desire to create a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee. They looked at Plano, Allen, and other cities in the country to try to get a clue on how to have the organization meetings and what the goals should be. One suggested that it mainly be for multicultural events, while another council member wants more outreach. They want the committee to allow city government to hear from more voices than the same few folks that are active in local politics. Richardson Council sounded committed to a DEI committee, just not the parameters for what committee’s expectations.
